Dum Dum (Bengali দমদম Dômdôm) is a populated municipality now corporation under Barrakpore Commissionaire near north Kolkata. It comes under Barrackpore sub-division and North 24 Parganas district of the state of West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority.[2] It is one of the main entry points to the city of Kolkata, providing a number of transportation facilities into that city from the northwest, such as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, formerly Dum Dum Airport, which offers domestic and international flights. Dum Dum has developed into a modern commercial centre and also hosts the Ordnance Factory Dumdum (OFDC) and Gun & Shell Factory Cossipore(GSF) of the Ordnance Factories Board, which manufactures armaments and other equipment for the Indian Armed Forces, Navy & Air Force. Dum Dum region is about 10  km from the city centre, defined as the Esplanade, Kolkata. The nearby localities include Nager Bazar, Motijheel, Ghughu Danga, Private Road, Chatakal, Jawpur, Rajbari and Lal Bagan.

Geography

Dum Dum is located at 22°37′N 88°25′E / 22.62°N 88.42°E / 22.62; 88.42.[3] It has an average elevation of 11 metres (36 feet).

History

During the 19th century the area was home to the Dum Dum Arsenal, a British Royal Artillery armoury, where, in the early 1890s, Captain Neville Bertie-Clay developed a bullet with the jacket cut away at the tip to reveal its soft lead core (see hollow-point bullet), known informally as a dum-dum,[4][5][6][7][8][9][10] or more correctly as an expanding bullet. The previous name of Dumdum was "Domdoma".

Demographics

The 2011 India census reported that Dum Dum had a population of 117,637.[1] The gender ratio was 927 females per 1000 males and 5.7 percent of the population was under six years of age.[1] Effective literacy was 93.51 percent; male literacy was 94.09 percent and female literacy was 92.88 percent.[1]

Accessibility

By metro

The Kolkata Metro previously terminated at Dum Dum metro station on the boundary of Dum Dum, with Dum Dum Road leading to the city and areas beyond. Since 2013, the line has been extended northwards to include the newly constructed Noapara station, which serves as the terminal point (north). However, the majority of trains still terminate at Dum Dum station, as it is better connected to other regions than Noapara.

By air

The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, or Kolkata Airport, is located on the periphery of Dum Dum and is therefore also called the Dum Dum Airport. There are flights to all major cities in India, as well as international flights to Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, Doha, Kuala Lumpur, Kunming, Kathmandu, Dhaka, Chittagong, Yangon, Abu Dhabi, Colombo, Hong Kong and Paro.

By rail

Dum Dum railway station is on the Sealdah–Ranaghat line. The railway station and the metro station are in the same complex. The Circular Railway also terminates at the same station. The other stations in Dum Dum are located at Dum Dum Cantonment and Patipukur (on the Circular Railway line) and Airport Gate No 1 (on the single Airport line). Travel to airport by rail is inconvenient, as there are only a few trains at odd hours.

By road

NH 34 starts from Dalkhola and ends at Dum Dum Road, one of the prime routes into the city of Dum Dum. Buses ply both arterial roads: the Jessore Road and the Dum Dum Road.

Travel within Dum Dum

There are a plenty of blue private and mini-buses buses available, as well as a few CSTC or WBSTC or CTC buses. Autos are plentiful and can be used for short stretches, for example to travel from Dum Dum Station to Nagerbazar, or Dum Dum Station to Chiriamore. Nagerbazar is the hub of autos where there are 4 routes originates viz: 1) Nagerbazar Dum Dum Junction 2) Nagerbazar Dum Dum Cantt 3) Nagerbazar Airport 1 no. gate 4) Nagerbazar Laketown-Jessore Road Connector

In addition, there are taxis: Nagerbazar and Airport being the largest taxi stands; others are in Birati, Central Jail, Laketown, Bangur, and Kalindi. The Dum Dum Station area does not have many taxis as the area is extremely crowded. The other popular means of travel over short distances is the rickshaw, newly battery operated rickshaws [locally called Totos] can also be seen. Additionally there are magic cars plying to different areas like Dakshineswar, Bali, Barasat, Madhyamgram from Airport Gate No.1
