E.M. Stanton Catchment is a neighborhood in the South Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is located between Broad Street and 19th Street, and extends from South Street to Federal Street. It has a small overlap with Point Breeze.[1] It borders Newbold, Hawthorne, Rittenhouse Square, Southwest Center City, and Point Breeze.

Background[edit]

The area was named after Edwin M. Stanton who was an American lawyer and politician who served as Secretary of War under the Lincoln Administration during most of the American Civil War. Stanton's effective management helped organize the massive military resources of the North and guide the Union to victory. He also organized the manhunt for Lincoln's killer, John Wilkes Booth.

The E.M. Stanton Catchment area is noted for being "... one of the smallest catchment areas" and is currently an area in transition.

Education[edit]

The School District of Philadelphia operates public schools. It is also home to the Edwin M. Stanton School.
