The company was founded by Danish immigrant William Astrup in 1876. The firm originally made sails, but shifted to other canvas products once steam-driven ships came to dominate the Great Lakes. The company patented several mechanisms for awnings and mechanical awnings, and it swiftly domination the awning industry. The Astrup Company built this structure in 1919, and remained in it until 2001. The Astrup Company was family-owned until 2007.
