All is well now, and a reasonable consideration for thepeople of the country will keep it well. The danger isthat the legitimate aspirations of a people who are tooreserved to complain aloud may be overlooked. If thisrecord, with its lessons of the past and the experience ofa long and close intimacy with Malays, serve to warnothers to avoid that danger, the purpose of the book isgained. Time means progress and expansion for all that partof Malaya which comes under British influence. It willcontinue to make rough places smooth and to attractstrangers of all colours and nationalities to a country bigwith possibilities of great development.
