underlined frame, verso; a letter; Clerk Saunders / This picture by Mrs. Rossetti, esteemed by her husband the / best of her works belonged for many years to Charles Eliot Norton / in America and so desirous was Mr Rossetti to have it again that / he exchanged a drawing of his own for it and kept it till his / death. Purchased of William Michael Rossetti in 1884. / There is no doubt that Gabriel Rossetti himself worked on / this picture as was customary with him, as Mr Burne-Jones told / me long ago. Much of the merit these works have belongs to him / and his aid is frequently visible in the preliminary drawings. / A finished sketch mostly done in carmine remains in the possession / of Wm Rossetti. / The title on the stretcher at the back is in the handwriting / of Wm Rossetti. / Charles Fairfax Murray
