Quand l'homme te frappa de sa lâche cognée,
roi qu'hier le mont portait avec orgueil,
Mon âme, au premier coup, retentit indignée,
Et dans la torét sainte il se fit un grand deuil.
Dis adieu, pauvre chêne, au printemps qui t'enivre:
Hier il t'a paré de feuillages nouveaux;
Tu ne sentiras plus ce bonheur de revivre:

Adieu les nids d'amour qui peuplaient tes rameaux!
