Summary[edit]

Non-free media information and use rationale true for Death of Hamza Ali Al-Khateeb
Description

After being detained during a protest, 13-year old Hamza's body was returned to his parents. The corpse showed signs of torture including broken bones, gunshots wounds, cigarette burns, bruising, and severed genitals. The family, after agreeing to keep images of the body from the public created a video and distributed images and copies of the video on the internet. Shock at the media led tens of thousands to show their support on Facebook and in street protests, as Hamza became a national and international symbol of Syrian government brutality. The Syrian government and the doctor who performed Hamza's autopsy denied that torture was involved in Hamza's death and blamed gunshot wounds from the earlier protests and then a month of decay.

Purpose of use

The purpose of this image is to visually demonstrate the condition of Hamza's body and the physical signs which led many to conclude torture was involved in his death. This image and the larger video from which it was taken have been reported on by over 30 mainstream reliable sources identifying the image as the proximate cause of galvanized support. In the Wikipedia article, counter-claims that the body only incurred damage from a gunshot wound are brought into contrast with the image, which can not be sufficiently described in words. As this is the actual image which led people to protest, there is no substitute for actually seeing it. The image is not gratuitously violent and treats the subject with respect. The family wanted these images to be seen and showing in on Wikipedia would not further damage the personal or privacy rights of Hamza or his relatives. The image has already become historically significant as recorded in multiple reliable sources here.

Replaceable?

No free substitute; further, the underlying video was distributed willingly to media and activists by the family. There is no commercial use for this image.
