Summary

Description
English: Lock 13 on the C & O Canal. Part of this lock is underneath the American Legion Bridge (Interstate 495) Note also that the upstream gate is BELOW the breast wall (or cill). This is the later (post 1830) design of the lock. Most locks below Point of Rocks have the pre-1830 design which has the upstream gate ABOVE the breast wall, and has culverts in the lock masonry to fill the lock. The gates in the locks today are reconstructions with paddle valves in the gates rather than using the culverts, most of which have been closed with bricks, but Lock 13 is an anomaly, having the post-1830 design. See Thomas Hahn's Towpath Guide for more info on this.
