Summary

Description
English: Detail of small relief sculpture on monument in St Peter's Church, Barnstaple to Richard Beaple (1564-1643), merchant, ship owner, thrice Mayor of Barnstaple and generous benefactor of the poor. The image is one of a pair, designed to remind the viewer of the charitable works of Beaple. The merchant at left, perhaps representing Beaple, points to a treasure chest. The ships in the background perhaps indicate the source of his wealth
