Summary

Regency underclothes, from an 1824 reprint of the 1811 "Book of English Trades", showing one form of Regency "stays" (front-lacing short stays, incapable of constricting the natural waist, as Victorian corsets later did). According to the original caption, this "represents the Dress-Maker taking the pattern off from a lady, by means of a piece of paper or cloth; the pattern, if taken in cloth, becomes afterwards the lining of the dress". (The styles shown are more appropriate to the year 1811 than to 1824.)
