Summary

Description
English: This is a devise for finding the time of day from the position of the sun. The built in compass allows one to set it at the right angle for the shadow of the shaft to fall on the correct hour marking. It was made at a time near the beginning of the 20th century when devices for keeping time were much more expensive and less practical than they are in the 21st century. It is about 10 cm. long and less than one cm. thick when closed. The case closes to protect the hinged shaft.
