InJuly of that year Brady, Gardner, and Miley had tried to get a photograph of the general on his horse, butthe weather was so hot and the flies accordingly so annoying that the pictures were very poor. But theSeptember picture has become probably the most popular photograph in the South. In the Army ofNorthern Virginia the horse was almost as well known as his master. Il was foaled near the White SulphurSprings in West Virginia, and attracted the notice of General Lee in 18G1. Lees affect ion for it was verydeep and strong. On it he rode from Richmond to Lexington to assume his duties as president of WashingtonCollege. During the remainder of his life Traveller was his constant companion.
