Summary

Description
English: Fractional Currency was introduced by the United States Federal Government following the Civil War. These notes were in use between 21 August 1862 and 15 February 1876, and could be redeemed by the U.S. Postal Service for the face value in postage stamps. Fractional notes were issued in 3, 5, 10, 15, 25, and 50 cent denominations. This specimen note depicts Sherman and Grant and was never issued for circulation due to an act of Congress on 7 April 1866 preventing the likeness of any living person from being depicted on circulating currency.
