Object history Aus dem Jahr 1366 ist ein Siegelabdruck überliefert, der nach 1340 entstanden ist, mit dem Hasen und dem Bischofsstab im Schild. Der Hase steht redend für den einstigen Namen Hasaried der Reichsabtei Herrieden, die in der zweiten Hälfte des 8. Jahrhunderts gegründet wurde und die König Arnulf 888 dem Eichstätter Bischof Erchanbold geschenkt hatte. Dieser wandelte das Kloster in ein Kollegiatstift um. Der Bischofsstab stellt die langjährige Verbindung zum Bistum Eichstätt dar, die erst 1803 mit der Säkularisation endete. In einigen Wappenabbildungen erscheint der Hase links gewendet, seine Hinterpfoten stützt er an den auswärts gerichteten Stab. Das heutige Stadtwappen geht auf das zweite Stadtsiegel aus der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts zurück.
