English: Wolf (Canis lupus) specimen, Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow A lost part of the British fauna. The last Wolves in Britain probably died out in the 17th century according to Derek Yalden in his History of British Mammals, although there is a story, of dubious veracity, about the killing of the last Wolf in 1743.
There have been attempts to prepare the public for reintroduction of Wolves to Scotland, but fear of the species still prevails. The most feasible plan has involved introducing the species to the island of Rum, a National Nature Reserve and an area where Red Deer are so common they are damaging vegetation and the burrows of the largest Manx Shearwater colony in the world. There is, however, some debate about whether it is a large enough area to support a pack.
