Gente de Zona (sometimes stylized as Gente D' Zona) is a Cuban reggaeton group founded by Alexander Delgado in 2000. The group combines reggaeton rhythms with more traditional forms of Cuban music.

Gente de Zona found its first international success following their collaboration with Enrique Iglesias on his 2014 release "Bailando". The track was awarded three Latin Grammy Awards and received widespread international airplay.[1]

History[edit]

As the first Cuban duo to reach the Hot Latin Songs chart on Billboard, Gente De Zona has been on the vanguard of a musical revolution.

The pair, musicians Randy Malcolm and Alexander Delgado, pioneered the “Cubatón” genre. “Cubatón” is now one of the most dominant forces in the global music arena, merging traditional Cuban sounds and rhythms with reggaetón and Caribbean beats.

Malcolm and Delgado first made an international impact with their 2014 hit “Bailando,” featuring Enrique Iglesias and Descemer Bueno. Not only did the track lead the list of Hot Latin Songs on Billboard, but it also became the longest lasting number one song in history.

The track proved that the instant hit was not just beginner’s luck. After “Bailando,” “La Gozadera,” featuring their friend and mentor Marc Anthony, took the world by storm and topped the Billboard Latin Airplay, Latin Tropical and Latin Rhythm charts. Since then, Gente De Zona, now signed to Sony Music, have started a movement.

Thus far, three of Gente de Zona’s singles reached the top 10 spots on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, and their first U.S. Latin album release, Visualizate, debuted at number one on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart in 2016.

The two have won numerous Premios Juventud and Premios Tu Mundo awards. In addition, their album Visualizate won a Latin AMA for “Best Tropical Album” and a Latin Grammy for “Best Fusion Tropical Album.”

The essence of their success lies in their trademark Gente de Zona sound: the ability to mix musical sounds to create blended hits. Delgado, founder of the group and owner of the signature deep voice, admits that he is not a “conservative” musician. He has his finger on the pulse of pop culture and gives the public what they want to hear. Malcolm brings his own musical pedigree which he learned from his father, who was a member of the esteemed timban ensemble Charanga Habanera.

Gente de Zona continues to write their history in music under the direction and representation of Guillermo Morejón and Marc Anthony’s entertainment company, Magnus Media.

Before the duo’s first US tour in 2017, Gente De Zona released the single “Si No Vuelves,” which has surpassed 146 million views on YouTube. Gente de Zona surprised fans with a follow up single “Ni Tu Ni Yo,” featuring Jennifer Lopez which has over 97 million views.

In February 2018, Gente De Zona performed at the International Festival of La Cancion Viña del Mar in Chile, where they were selected as fan favorites for their attitude and energy. Continuing with their global collaborations, Gente de Zona fulfilled another dream by recording with the acclaimed Italian singer Laura Pausini for her single “Nadie Ha Dicho.”

On June 6, 2018, Gente De Zona shared their most recent single “Te Duele” with the world. The song was composed by Alexander Delgado, Randy Malcolm, Angel “Putiti” Arce and Beatriz “Bea César and was released alongside its official video, which was filmed in Cuba. The success of “Te Duele” helped it become one of Zumba’s official theme songs and is featured on their Spotify playlist.

In September 2018, Gente De Zona launched their single, “Lento” featuring Mexican artist Thalia. The video garnered over 27 million views within a month of its release.

Continuing on their trend of iconic collaborations, Gente de Zona released a new single on October 5, 2018 titled “Nadie Como Yo,” featuring Cuban pop musician, Malu Trevejo.

Most recently, Gente De Zona premiered their own HBO Latino special, En Letra de Otro. The hour-long experience was filmed in Cuba and featured Randy and Alex performing their favorite Latin classics adapted to the unique Cubatón style. En Letra de Otro is now available on all digital music platforms.
