Gollis is a Norwegian tourist attraction in the form of a 9 metre tall Santa Claus made out of plastic materials. It is located in Lyngseidet in Lyngen in the county of Troms.
It is also known as the World's Biggest Santa Claus.[1]
History
Standing at the towering height of 30 feet, this Lyngen produced sculpture has a touch of Christmas inspiration.[2] Gollis was built in 1992 during the term of Werner Kiil as Lyngen Municipal Mayor. The structure came with the idea of a Christmas beer tasting Santa Claus. The mayor gave this assignment to a teacher as his assignment during a visit to a school made from plastic.[3] It is located in Lyngseidet in Lyngen in the county of Troms. Lyngseidet is 15 km north of the village of Furuflaten and 12 km by ferry from Olderdalen [4]
Gollis is popular with tourists, but the locals are divided in their views. It may be a symbol of the friendly and warm-hearted citizens of Lyngen, but has been voted the ugliest tourist attraction in Norway in the newspaper Verdens Gang.[5]
