Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) (Chinese: 广东外语外贸大学/廣東外語外貿大學; pinyin: Guǎngdōng Wàiyǔ Wàimào Dàxué) is a public university in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. The university provides research and higher education in several international studies.

History

The University was established in June 1995 through the merger of Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages （Chinese: 广州外国语学院）and Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade （Chinese: 广州对外贸易学院）.[1] The former, one of three institutes of foreign languages[2] under the direct jurisdiction of the State Education Commission (presently Ministry of Education of China) in that era, established in the year 1965. The latter was founded in 1980, which was one of the four institutions of international trade directly under the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (presently Ministry of Commerce of China). In 2008, Guangdong College of Finance and Economics merged into Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.[3]

Geography

The University is situated in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province in South China.[4] There are three campuses of the university, the North, South and Dalang Campus, with a total area of 145 hectares or 1.53 km². The North Campus, which covers an area of 55 hectares, is located at the northern foot of Baiyun Mountain in Baiyun District, Guangzhou; the South Campus, with an area of 73 hectares, is situated in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center or literally Guangzhou University Town according to the Chinese name in Panyu District, Guangzhou; and Dalang Campus, having an area of 17 hectares, lies in Dalang, Dongguan, Guangdong.

Academics

GDUFS has about 2,000 faculty members, including full or associate professors and lecturers from other countries. The total student population is about 33,800 of which over 20,000 are undergraduate and the rest postgraduate students.[5]

Currently the university offers 55 undergraduate majors in 20 faculties and departments, which fall into 7 disciplines, namely literature, economics, management, law, engineering, science, and education. In early 1981, the University was granted the rights to award Master's degrees and in 1986 it began awarding Doctoral degrees. It was one of the earliest universities in the China to cater to postgraduate students.[citation needed] Of all the degree courses offered to students, five are named key disciplines at the provincial level and one at the national level, while eight are named provincial priorities.[citation needed] GDUFS has two state designated research centers, one for research in humanities and social sciences and the other for training students of minor languages. In addition, the university has a province designated research center for the study of foreign literatures and cultures.[6]

Library

The GDUFS Library was set up in June 1995 by merging the then existing Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages Library and the Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade Library. [citation needed] The total floor space of the library is 22,000 square meters on the north campus and 28,000 square meters on the south campus. The gross investment in the two libraries has reached nearly 200 million Yuan. [citation needed] The library has an area of 16,000 square meters of open-shelf stack rooms for reading and borrowing, a multi-purpose auditorium with 450 seats, and projection and audio systems.

The GDUFS Library has a large collection, focussing especially on the field of foreign studies. In April 2005, the collection held by the library amounted to 1.23 million volumes with 820,000 Chinese books, 240,000 English books, 130,000 minor foreign language books and 12,000 non-book materials in 12 different languages. The GDUFS Library subscribes to more than 2,400 Chinese and foreign periodicals—among which 249 are original foreign periodicals. Abundant monographs of linguistics, literature, trade and economy, periodicals, reference books and 14 kinds of Chinese and foreign language web database resources constitute the literature base of the library.[citation needed]

The library has been increasing the number of subscriptions to electronic information, especially to overseas full text network databases.

The ALEPH500 system is applied to classify books, journals and other materials. [citation needed]

The library includes the following departments: Acquisition & Cataloguing Department, Circulation Department, Reference Services Department, Technical Services Department and General Office. The number of staff members totals 82. [citation needed]

Cisco School of Informatics

The School of Informatics (SI) is a young faculty which originated from the Faculty of Computer Science and Technology. It began its undergraduate enrollment in 2001 and now has over 1300 students. The faculty has 5 undergraduate departments, namely:

  • Computer Science and Technology Department;
  • Software Engineering Department;
  • Statistics Department;
  • Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Department;
  • Communication Management and Systems Department.

The School of Informatics covers 7 teaching and scientific research branches, and manages 6 professional laboratories, each of which has an area of 3000 square meters, and facilities valued at 10 million RMB.

The faculty has 8 professors and 21 associate professors. Among the teachers, over 84% have gained master's degrees, 83% are under 45 years old and 2 are in university-level-focus training. The young teachers with their professional knowledge and high software and hardware systems development competence are especially qualified.

As for the students, they are widely favored for their good professional knowledge, comprehensive abilities in practice and excellent communication skills. They have gained many awards for software design in recent years. The graduates from the school all get employed and are in high-level positions. Among them, 16% further their study or go abroad, and 47% work in the government or for famous state-owned or foreign enterprises.

In April 11, 2010, the informatic corporation Cisco signed a contract with the university entitling the School of Informatics. With education and career assistance from Cisco, the School of Informatics changed the name into Cisco School of Informatics.[10]

College of Continuing Education (CCE) and Open College (OC)

The College of Continuing Education (CCE) and Open College (OC) offer courses for vocational education as well as adult education which can eventually lead to a bachelor's degree for young people other than regularly admitted undergraduates (students admitted after taking the nationwide university entrance exams).

The College of Continuing Education was founded in March 2001, with three departments, namely: English Training Department; Japanese Training Department; Vocational Training Department.

Besides, there are correspondence education centers in Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Dongguan, Zhaoqing, Shantou, etc. The courses include English, Business English, Japanese Comprehension training, listening and speaking training, trainings for different exams, adult education with degree courses, evening courses and correspondence courses. In 2006, the College started a new course project which was characterized by the concept "immersion." Hence the English Immersion Camp and the Japanese Immersion Camp, both of which adopt the concept of "immersion," using tutorial teaching methods in limited-size classes, which will eventually produce very satisfactory results in a short period of time.

The College of Open Learning, or Open College, founded in June 1999, has a student body of over 5,000, with five departments, namely: English Department; Business English Department One; Business English Department Two; International Business Department; Japanese Department.

Inspired by the Third National Conference on Education and approved by the departments of the Provincial Government, it is a new kind of tertiary institution which is part of the strategy of "achieving the all-round development of Guangdong province by means of boosting education and high technologies." As the slogan has it, these institutions play the role of expanding the scale of higher education to self-study students. Young people from all walks of life can apply to International College without taking entrance exams. Most of those admitted, however, are high-school students whose scores for the year's nationwide university entrance exams do not allow them to go on to university but whose scores are still above a certain level. In running this program, the College adheres to the principles of "low requirements for admission and high standards for graduation."

Department of Physical Education (DPE)

The Department of Physical Education (DPE) offers 14 courses, namely basketball, volleyball, football, tennis, table tennis, swimming, martial arts, taekwondo, eurhythmics, aerobics, dance, orienteering, optional sports and multi-purpose physical education. These courses aim at cultivating students' creativity, physical skills and love for sport. Every year, more than 97.8% of GDUFS students reach the national standard of physical fitness for university students.

Besides giving classes to students from colleges, faculties and schools at the university, teachers of the Department also train 10 university sports teams which participate in many sports competitions and which have gained a number of awards.

Faculty of Asian Languages and Cultures (FALC)

The Faculty of Asian Languages and Cultures (FALC) was established in January 1997 on the basis of the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures of the former Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages. In total there are 8 teaching and research departments and institutions affiliated to the Faculty of Asian Languages and Cultures, namely:

Department of Japanese; Department of Thai; Department of Indonesian---Malaysian; Department of Vietnamese; Department of Korean; Teaching and Research Center for Uncommonly Used Languages (National level); Research Center of Japanese; Research Center of South-East Asia.

FALC confers five language and culture degrees:

Bachelor's degree in Japanese; Bachelor's degree in Indonesian/Malay; Bachelor's degree in Thai; Bachelor's degree in Vietnamese; Bachelor's degree in Korean.

Apart from the Korean major, which was only approved in 2002, the 4 other majors enjoy a long history of 34 years. Over this long period, great achievements have been made in the development of each major and the faculty has become more influential both at home and abroad.

Currently the faculty has a staff of 71 (62 teachers, 7 members for political work and 2 tutors). As many as 673 students are studying for a Bachelor's degree (512 as Japanese majors, 161 as other majors), 43 for a Master's degree and 2 for a Doctor's degree. Since the merger of Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages and Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade in June 1995, the number of graduates in various majors of the faculty totals 693.

Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture (FCLC)

The Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture (FCLC), was founded in 2005, based on the Faculty of International Cultural Exchange of the former Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages. The Faculty confers four Bachelor's degrees, namely:

Bachelor's degree in Chinese Language and Literature;

Bachelor's degree in Chinese Language (Senior Foreign-oriented Secretary); Bachelor's degree in Chinese Language (Management of Foreign-oriented Culture); Bachelor's degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.

It also offers two master's degrees:

Master's degree in Literature and Art; Master's degree in Comparative Literature and World Literature.

FCLC counts a staff of 25 teachers, including doctoral tutors, master tutors, 10 professors and 13 associate professors. Its graduates are quite competitive and popular on the job market. In addition, FCLC provides the Chinese Language Proficiency Test for foreign students studying at GDUFS' Mandarin Training Center.

Faculty of European Languages and Cultures (FEULC)

The Faculty of European Languages and Cultures (FEULC), established in 1965, was one of the earliest faculties of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. Its current specialties include French, German, Spanish, Russian, and Italian.

The Faculty confers the following degrees:

Doctoral degree in French; Bachelor's and Master's degrees in French Language and Literature; Bachelor's and Master's degrees in German Language and Literature; Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Russian Language and Literature; Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Spanish Language and Literature; Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Linguistics; Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Applied Linguistics.

The Faculty of European Languages and Cultures has a staff of professors and scholars with master's degrees or above who own rich teaching and academic experience. The Faculty aims to cultivate and develop graduate and postgraduate students who, besides their major language, have a good command of English coupled with capabilities of cross-cultural communication and professional knowledge in such fields as economy, management and informatics. In addition, the Faculty is in charge of the second foreign language teaching of students of other departments of GDUFS.

Graduates from this faculty have an employment rate which reached 100% in 2004, 98% in 2005, and 100% again in 2006. Graduates hold positions in government, travel agencies, universities, etc., as well as in fields such as interpreting, teaching, management and scientific research. Some choose to further their education abroad.

The Faculty of European Languages and Cultures enjoys a close international or interschool cooperative relationship with a great many universities and institutes of such countries as France, Germany, Russia, Spain, Cuba and Italy. Students of this faculty have the opportunity to study abroad via the system of these interschool cooperative relationships.

International Center (ICe)

The International Center (ICe), or Department of Chinese for International Students, located on the North Campus of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, has enrolled foreign students since 1987. The center boasts an excellent team of responsible and experienced teachers who never cease to upgrade and optimize their innovative teaching methods. Courses and programs offered are all tailor-made to meet the needs of students from around the world, helping them bridge cultural differences and enhance their language learning skills.

The International Centre has trained more than 3000 foreign students from over 50 countries and the current annual enrollment totals more than 500.

International College (ICo)

International College (ICo), or Center for Languages Training founded in March 2004, uses all the available resources of GDUFS to increase cooperation with foreign universities. At present, it has established ties with Lancaster University, University of Leeds, University of Leicester, University of Westminster, University of Gloucestershire, Coventry University, University of Central Lancashire and University of Portsmouth, all in Britain, and University of Queensland in Australia.

In order to better satisfy the great demand of talents in all fields related to foreign issues after China entered the WTO, International College set up various specialties including English Language and Culture, Mass Media and Culture, English for International Business, International Economy and trade, Finance, Electronic Business, Insurance, Logistics Management, Administration, Marketing, Accounting, Financial Management, Human Resource Management and Informatics Management.

International College advocates "moral integrity and outstanding performance," aiming at cultivating talents who have a broad global view and a sense of innovation. All the core courses are taught by teachers with master's degrees or above who have studied abroad. Non-core courses are taught by qualified teachers with master's degrees or above.

Students of International College who meet the academic requirements (no failed course and satisfactory ITLS result) can study at foreign universities which have cooperative ties with GDUFS and receive the degree offered by the respective university. Meanwhile, International College assists students who plan to study abroad to register for bachelor's, master's and doctor's degree programs at universities in the USA, Britain, Australia and Canada.

School of Art (SA)

The School of Art (SA), established in 2005, is a young and vigorous school. Currently it has four majors, namely:

Musical Performance; Artistic Design; Dance Performance; Musicology.

Located on the South Campus, the School of Art has its own detached Building of Art with complete and excellent teaching facilities, including plenty of piano rooms, dance performance halls, small musical theatres, special drawing rooms and galleries, providing an outstanding environment for the students to study, rehearse and perform. The school's teaching staff includes some thirty excellent teachers, who have won all kinds of awards in artistic performance and education. With the unique advantage of GDUFS in foreign languages, the School of Art aims at training professional artists proficient in foreign languages.

School of English and Education(SEE)

The Institute of English Language Education (IELE), founded in 2001 and restructured in 2005, plays an important role in English teaching at GDUFS. It is staffed with 118 full-time teachers who are experienced, highly qualified and devoted. It consists of the Department of English Education, the Center for English Education and 4 English teaching sections which offer a range of English courses to non-English majors of 9 other faculties at GDUFS. Its courses include Study Strategies, Western Society and Culture, Interpretation and Translation.

Teachers of the Institute insist on "Student-centered Learning" and adopt the latest teaching methods. They also extend the learning environment by preparing English learning materials in multi-media language labs for students to study all by themselves.

Since 2005, the Institute offers a Bachelor's degree in English Education for students specializing in English Language Education and International Communication.

The inspiration for the School of English and Education (SEE) were teachers of English courses already working in the university. In 2005, because of the expansion of the University and the Education and English departments, a new interdisciplinary school, the School of English and Education was founded. Since the 1980s, the faculty has developed a range of English language courses and educational courses. It has a staff of more than 130, with 120 full-time teachers, including more than 20 full and associate professors, more 70 lecturers and a number of experienced overseas scholars. More than 90% of total staff members have doctor’s or master’s degrees.

The five departments in the school (the English Education Department, the 1st and 2nd Integrated English departments, the Content-based English department and the English Listening and Speaking department) take charge of educating English education majors and offering English courses for non-English majors in the university. The newly established College English Learning Support Center is ready to assist students in their autonomous learning at any time. The School also sets up five research centers to carry out academic studies on College English, Content-based English, Teacher Development, Comparative Education and Educational Linguistics respectively. By applying for the master programs in Curriculum & Instruction, Principles of Education and Comparative Education, the faculty is speeding up its discipline construction and bringing up its own group of talented people with great potential abilities to incorporate different subjects. The same progress is seen in its social service sector due to the establishment of English Teacher Training Center and Liaison Department. With quite a few off-campus teaching and researching practice bases built up recently, the faculty is opening up new opportunities to cooperate with its counterparts both home and abroad. SEE’s political work, students management, faculty administration and labor union activities also play a key role in building up the culture of the school.

A harmonious mechanism is taking shape in the school, which advocates “imbuing people with lofty ideals, attracting people with promising cause, motivating people with rapid development, inspiring people with persistent caring, retaining people with generous returns, urging people with scientific policies”. The faculty-oriented school has become a close community for teachers to work and for students to study.

Students majoring in English Education shall pass TEM 4 and TEM 8 for graduation. Through learning English language and education theories, along with teaching practice, they will develop all-around capacities on English teaching and research in educational institutions, English training and management in enterprises. Occupation Orientation: universities, high schools, R&D institutions, foreign-related enterprises and government institutions, managerial departments of government agencies, customs, foreign affairs departments and corporations.

  • Career orientations: English teacher, English trainer, researcher, interpreter, translator or other positions related to English language and culture in institutions and enterprises of education, foreign affairs, foreign trade, the news and publishing industry, broadcasting, film and television industry, tourism, public relations, and government agencies. English Education major graduates will grow into highly qualified talents working as teachers, trainers, translators and managers in education, foreign affairs, trade and commerce, culture, media, tourism, and research sections Major courses consist of two modules:
  1. Courses on English language and culture: Integrated English, Oral English, New Perspectives, Advanced English, An Introduction to English-speaking Countries, Translation, Interpretation, British Literature and American Literature, General Linguistics, Educational Linguistics, etc.
  2. English or bilingual Education courses: Principles of Education, Curriculum and Instruction, History of Chinese Education, History of Foreign Education, Teaching Methodology, Educational Psychology, Educational Leadership, Comparative Education, Culture of Education and Educational Technology.

School of English for International Business (SEIB)

The School of English for International Business (SEIB) was established in May 2001, through a merger of several departments from other schools and faculties. Striving to cultivate students with a good command of English and a solid foundation in international business, the school provides two majors, and accordingly confers B.A.degree and Bachelor's degree in Management: English; International Business. English majors can specialize in four fields of study, namely: International Business Management; International Trade; International Finance; International Business Law. At present, the school has 1898 undergraduates, 91graduates and a staff of 180 teachers, among which 34 are professors and associate professors, 32 are lecturers, 104 are teachers, and there are 10 foreign experts as well. Most members of the faculty have been or are further being educated in the US, the UK, Australia, Canada and Germany. They possess Master's degrees or Doctoral degrees in Management, Economics, Finance, Law, and so on. Some of them have close connections with the corporate world and have a lot of business experience.

Besides the learning of English, international business and computer skills, students are provided opportunities to participate in a variety of academic and social practice activities to develop learning and practice abilities. Equipped with a combined background of English and business, graduates of this school enjoy a high rate of employment and are welcomed by many enterprises and various organizations.

School of International Trade and Economics (SITE)

The School of International Trade and Economics (SITE) was formed and developed on the basis of Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade, which was founded in 1980—one of the four institutions of its kind under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (now Ministry of Commerce).

Maintaining a long term and close relation with the Foreign Trade and Economics Department, SITE has the advantage of acquiring the latest and most accurate information on trade and economic policies. SITE prepares students who are able to use English fluently to engage actively in international trade and economics and financial management on the one hand, and to conduct theoretical studies and policy analyses on the other.

Currently, there are four departments in SITE, offering both undergraduate and post-graduate programs. The five departments are the following:

Department of International Trade and Economics; Department of International Finance; Department of Economics; Department of Risk Management and Insurance.

Department of E-Business, the former department of SITE was changed to the School of Management of the University.

There are 77 teachers working at SITE, 27 of whom have PhDs. Among the 77 teachers, 15 are professors, 25 associate professors, 25 lecturers, 7 assistant lecturers and 5 apprentice lecturers. With an advantage of excellent English and professional knowledge, graduates from SITE are warmly welcomed on the job market. They usually work in the Department of Foreign Trade and Economics, and in foreign companies or financial institutions.

School of Interpreting and Translation Studies (SITS)

The School of Interpreting and Translation Studies (SITS), located on the University's North Campus, was established in May 2005. Currently, the School has 5 departments:

The Department of Interpreting; The Department of Translation Studies; The Research Center for Interpreting and Translation Studies; The Training Center for Interpreters and Translators; The National Resources Center for Translation Studies.

The School has a teaching staff with rich experience in teaching and great academic achievements. Among the 15 members of the faculty, 4 have doctoral degrees and three are currently furthering their studies as doctoral candidates, while the rest are holders of master's degrees. Two-thirds of the teaching staff are professors or associate professors.

The School provides a complete line of degrees, including:

Bachelor's degree in Interpreting; Bachelor's degree in Translation; Dual Degree (4+0); Master's degree in Interpreting; Master's degree in Translation; PhD degrees in Interpreting/Translation.

The majority of its student body are graduate students. The School aims to help students lay a solid foundation in both English and Chinese and to equip them with a good command of skills required of competent interpreters and translators to conduct high-level interpreting and translation work in such areas as international relations, diplomacy, foreign economics and trade, culture and technology.

School of Journalism and Communication (SJC)

The School of Journalism and Communication (SJC) of GDUFS was founded in 2005, originating from the Department of Journalism of the School of International Cultural Communication. It has four departments, namely:

Department of Journalism; Department of Advertising; Research Institute of Media Economics; Research Institute of Marketing Communication.

At the undergraduate level, courses of Journalism, Advertising, Broadcasting, and Art of Hosting are offered by a staff of 30 teachers, among which are 3 professors, 5 associate professors, and 6 with master's degrees. The school offers the following degree:

Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Communication.

And in collaboration with the School of Interpreting and Translation Studies, it also offers an advanced degree:

Master's degree in Communication, Translation and Interpretation.

SJC employs a group of experts as guest professors from the Propaganda Department of Guangdong Provincial Committee, three major newspaper corporations in Guangzhou, Guangdong television broadcasting corporations and Shenzhen newspaper corporations. SJC has close contact with a number of journalism-related institutes of different universities in Hong Kong, America and Britain.

The School of Legal Studies (SLS), a cradle for judges, prosecutors, diplomats and lawyers, has five institutes, namely:

Center for WTO Law Studies/SLS Department of Diplomacy/SLS Institute of International Affairs Department of International Politics/SLS NGO Research Institute/SLS

The School offers three Bachelor's degrees:

Bachelor's degree in Law; Bachelor's degree in Diplomacy; Bachelor's degree in International Politics.

The School of Legal Studies has a staff of 50 teachers, including 13 professors, 13 associate professors and 14 lecturers. Many of them are qualified lawyers and arbitrators and are rich in teaching experience. In addition, the School retains several experts in law and diplomacy as visiting professors.

The School of Legal Studies attach great importance to the combination of theory and practice. It aims at nurturing students with analytic and problem-solving capacities and with an all-round intellectual development. Graduates of the School are expected to have expertise in law, diplomacy and international politics, as well as possess good Chinese and foreign language abilities.

School of Management (SM)

The School of Management (SM) was founded in 2001, when the faculties in GDUFS were restructured. Now it is the largest school in terms of enrollment and teaching staff.

The School confers 7 Bachelor's degrees, namely:

Bachelor's degree in Business Management; Bachelor's degree in Accounting; Bachelor's degree in International Marketing; Bachelor's degree in Financial Management; Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management; Bachelor's degree in Logistics Management; Bachelor's degree in Taxation.

The School offers two Master's programs as well in:

Enterprise Management; Accounting. The School of Management adopts modern ways of teaching such as "case studies" to cultivate talents of management. The School also attaches great importance to scientific research. The teachers have set up 4 scientific research teams and 9 research centers. Their academic theses have been published in national key journals or authoritative periodicals. The graduates are expected to be equipped with advanced specialties and must be good at using foreign languages.

Finally, the School actively develops academic exchanges and cooperation with overseas institutions. It has established relations with Harding University in America and Lakehead University in Canada. Besides, exchanges and collaborations with universities in the United Kingdom and Australia are on the increase and cover more and more fields.

School of Politics and Public Administration (SPPA)

The school of Politics and Public Administration (SPPA) is divided into the following departments:

The Public Enterprise Administration Department; The Administrative Management Department; The Applied Psychology Department; The Political Theory Teaching Department; The Marxism Theory and Ideological and Political Education Research Center; The Ethical Education and Psychological Education Research Institute.

The school has 44 qualified teachers, including one director for Doctoral Candidates, 7 professors, and 19 associate professors. 65% of the teachers have obtained post-doctoral degrees. The school has always been promoting the concepts of "Harmony, Ambition, Creation and Development" and the educational principle of "Putting people first."   • Academic Festival

This festival, held every term, is very significant in stimulating the students' creativity and fostering their comprehensive abilities. It reflects the spirit of creation and the passion of seeking real knowledge. Besides that, it also strengthens mutual communication and assistance among all the faculties, and helps raise the academic level of GDUFS. The festival's aim is to raise the comprehensive abilities of the students, not only in terms of knowledge, but also in terms of creativity and inspiration through activities such as the Simulated Court held by the School of Legal Studies and the Students' Creative Design Competition held by the Student Union.

  • English Olympics

The English Olympics is a new contest undertaken on GDUFS' south campus. It has been held two times since 2005, aiming to boost the image and atmosphere of English culture learning of GDUFS among the universities in University Town.

  • English Proficiency Contest

This contest boosts the comprehensive skills of cross-cultural communication in English of GDUFS students, fostering teamwork spirit and innovation ability and illustrating the excellence of English teaching at GDUFS.

  • GDUFS Cup Ball Games

The GDUFS Cup Ball games include GDUFS Cup Basketball, GDUFS Cup Football, GDUFS Cup Table Tennis, etc. These games are feasts for GDUFS' sports fans. In addition, these games provide a platform for the students to make more friends.

  • Martial Arts for Everybody!

The Martial Arts Association was founded in 1985 and was one of the earliest martial arts associations at universities in Guangzhou. It is now one of the most popular associations of GDUFS.

Its traditional activities include farewell parties for senior students, birthday parties, autumn outings, etc. The Association puts forward the slogan "Everybody Practices Martial Arts!" And members of the Association practice martial arts together on the playground every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. Eight members of the Association, representing GDUFS, competed in the 6th Guangdong College Student Sports Meeting and achieved satisfactory success. Finally, the "Everybody Practices Martial Arts!" activity is one of the 10 best activities of GDUFS.

  • Serve the Countryside in Three Domain: science, culture and sanitation

Every year, thousands of GDUFS students spend their summer time in some remote areas of China, to share their knowledge, enthusiasm, and sense of social commitment. This activity has a major influence both inside the university and in the society. Over several years, GDUFS teachers and students have pressed their footprints on the land of many less developed areas both in and out of Guangdong province. Students taking part in this activity usually engage in English teaching, medical service, household appliance repair, etc. They put their knowledge learned in class into useful practice in the society.

  • Sound of Autumn

The art activities at GDUFS, from photography to singing, are so flourishing that it is impossible to list all of them. So let us name only the most famous one—the Sound of Autumn. The competition each year is so intense that hundreds of students register for the competition but only a dozen reach the final. The incredible musical talents of the competitors are praised and marveled at by teachers, students and even professionals.

  • The Grand Humanities Forum

The Grand Humanities Forum consists of a series of lectures with the themes of human culture, political currents and social sciences. Its topics which are decided by students' online votes are not only dynamic but also diverse, covering different fields from ancient Chinese philosophy and literature to current international relations and trends, foreign cultures and philosophies, etc.

The activity has been so popular with the students from the different colleges since it was first organized jointly by the CPC Publicity Department and the Library in March 2005. Various lecturers and professors from the best universities as well as famous writers have come to give unforgettable lectures, aiming to inspire students' cultural consciousness and enhance their understanding of past and present social and cultural phenomena.[12]

  • CPC Secretary, Sui Guangjun

Sui Guangjun was born in Beijing in October 1961. He graduated from Guangzhou Jinan University, got a Master's degree and taught at university. He received a Ph.D. in Enterprise Management in June 1996 and became a Professor of Economics in December 1997 and Doctoral Supervisor in June 2000. He was elected Academic Chairperson at the provincial level in the talent-raising program of MOE in 1998 and 2001 consecutively. He investigated and visited foreign institutions of higher education such as Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, the University of Amsterdam, Stanford University, Lancaster University in the UK and the Universite de Lyon, France.

He assumed the roles of Vice-President of the HK-Macao Economic Research Institute in Jinan University, Director of Enterprise Management, Vice-Dean of the School of Management, Director of the Post-Doctoral Mobile Station for Applied Economics, President of the Institute of Enterprise Development (a key university research institute of Humanities and Social Sciences in Guangdong), and Director of the MBA Educational Center from 1992 to 2001. He became the Dean of the School of Management at Jinan University in November 2001. He was a member of the Party Committee and Vice-President of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. He was President and Vice-CPC Secretary of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies from July 2008 to March 2010. Currently, he is the CPC Secretary of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

His research mainly focuses on industrial economics, innovation and risk management and strategic management. He has headed and completed the National Social Science Fund Project, the Ministry of Education's "China-EU Cooperation Projects in Higher Education," Soft Science Project of National Natural Science Foundation and the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province. He also headed sixteen horizontal business management issues and published eight academic works such as " Case Studies with Management, "" Guangdong in its turning point, " " Guangdong Industry Development Report " and more than 80 academic articles. He is currently a member of the Business Administration Education Steering Committee of Ministry of Education, Vice-Chairman of the Industrial Economy Research Association of Guangdong Province, Guangzhou City, special researcher with the Economic and Social Development Research Center of Guangdong Province and Guangzhou.

He is now in charge of overall administration of the Party committee at GDUFS.

  • President & Vice-CPC Secretary, Zhong Weihe

Professor Zhong Weihe was the founding Dean of the School of Interpreting and Translation Studies and Dean of the Faculty of English Language and Culture, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies before he was appointed Vice President. He is Honorary Fellow of the University of Warwick, the U.K. He has an MA in literature translation from Nanjing Normal University and another in interpreting and translation studies from the University of Westminster, U.K. He was enrolled in the talent-raising program of MOE as a future provincial subject leader, New Century Excellent Talents Project held by the Ministry of Education and talent-raising program of MOE at the national level.

Professor Zhong is currently Deputy Party Secretary, President, professor and doctoral tutor of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. He was once the Vice President of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Vice President and President of the Faculty of English Language and Culture, the Founding Dean of the College of Translation. His current positions are as follows: Vice Chairman of State Council Academic Degrees Committee of the "National Translation Graduate Education Steering Committee," member of the Ministry of Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee, National Translation Professional Qualifications (level) Examinations in English Expert Committee (Human Resources and Social Security), Vice President of Translators Association of China, Vice President of the Translators Association of Guangdong Province, Guangzhou Translation Association and the Translators Association of Science and Technology in Guangzhou. He is also Vice President of the Guangdong Provincial Association of Young Scientists, the Ninth Guangdong Provincial Youth Federation and the 10th and 11th of Guangzhou Youth Federation.

His research mainly focuses on interpretation theory and interpretation teaching research and translation studies. As a well-known expert in interpreting studies, he has interpreted for many national, provincial and municipal leaders, foreign heads of state and influential people in politics and commerce. His main academic contributions are as follows: more than fifty articles published in noted academic journals and fifteen textbooks, works, translations and lexicons. He is currently undertaking these research projects: "Translation of Undergraduate Research Training Mode" (2009 Humanities and Social Fund Project by Ministry of Education), "Interpreting Research Methodology" (Guangdong Province Key Research Base of Social Sciences major projects), "Computer-aided translation and interpretation (CATIS) Learning System Development and Application (horizontal issues)", and "Foreign Language Training Quality Assurance System" (Key Project in 2007 Higher Education Reform Project in Guangdong Province).

He has received the following awards: "National Excellent Teacher" title and awards, 2001; Outstanding Returned Youth Business Star in Guangdong Province, 2003; Guangzhou Municipal Science and Technology Award for outstanding contribution, 2004; seventh "Guangdong Youth '54' Award," 2005; Renowned Teachers Award in Guangdong Province, 2008; first prize in Guangzhou City Science and Technology Award (science and technology category), 2008; first prize in Higher Education Achievement in Guangdong Province, 2009. His course, "English Interpretation (Course Series)" was named national course in 2007.

At present he is in charge of overall administration.

  • Vice-CPC Secretary, Chen Jianping

Professor/Dr Chen Jianping was born in Guangdong in 1955. He majored in English Language & Literature at the Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages (now Guangdong University of Foreign Studies) and graduated from the English Department in 1975. He later studied at the Graduate School of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and received a Masters of Philosophy in Applied Linguistics. He also obtained an MA in Modern Social History from the Department of History at the University of Lancaster, UK. He did his PhD at Beijing Foreign Studies University and was awarded a PhD in English Language and Literature.

Professor/Dr Chen has held various teaching, research and administrative positions at GDUFS since he graduated from the Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages. He has been serving as Vice-President since 1995. He is also a Member of the National Foreign Languages Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education; Vice President of the China English Language Education Association; Vice Director of the National Research Association of International Business English and Vice President of the Guangdong Foreign Language Association.

His academic interests include research in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics and ESL/EFL teaching & learning, as well as intercultural communication. In 1991, he was awarded the title of Returned Scholar with Outstanding Achievements by the State Educational Commission and the Ministry of Personnel. He also received first prize at the Guangdong Teaching Achievements Award in 1996 and second at the National Teaching Achievements Award in 1997. He has also conducted a research project in EFL learning in the Chinese Socio-cultural Context funded by the National Research Fund for Social Sciences.

  • Vice-CPC Secretary, Xu Guobin

Xu Guobin was born in June 1954, in Jieyang, Guangdong Province. He is a Communist Party member and is now an Associate Professor at GDUFS. He graduated from Shaoguan Normal School in 1974, majored in English, and later from the Guangzhou Foreign Language College in 1982, majoring in French. In 1988, he graduated from the Communist Party School of Guangdong Province. From 1990 to 1991, he went to Paris University as a visiting scholar for further study. Later, he obtained a postgraduate diploma at Sun Yat-sen University, majoring in Ideological and Political Education.

He has guided and directed ideological and political education, Party work, and psychological consultation in various institutions such as South China Normal University, Beijing Language and Culture University, the National Academy of Education Administration, the Communist Party School of Guangdong Province and the China Vocational Training and Technical Instruction Center. He has published more than 60 academic essays and translated many articles. He is one of the editors of the book Psychological Training of College Students and one of the authors of Comparison and Creation - Comparison of Ethical Education in the West and the East.

He has been the Director of the Guangdong Research Center of the University of Ideological and Political Education, the Managing Director and Deputy Director of the Guangdong Special Committee for College Psychological Consultation, Director of the State Research Association of the University of Ideological and Political Education and member of the Special Committee for College Students Psychological Consultation of the China Association for Mental Health.

He is in charge of inspecting and supervising the Communist Party office and university office, safeguarding students work, managing the labor union, the youth league, the school board and alumni, preparing the next generation's work, conducting the school's cultural construction, and assisting in public relations work.

  • Vice-President, Fang Fanquan

Fang Fanquan was born in 1956, in Guangzhou, Guangdong. He graduated from the English Department of Beijing International Studies University in 1982. He received an MA in International Relations and Politics at the University of Sussex, UK. From 1982 to 2000, Fang worked for the Foreign Affairs Office of the People's Government of Guangdong Province, the Foreign Guest Office, the Sister Cities Office, and the Press & Cultural Office. He was a visiting professor at GDUFS from 1997 to 2000. Fang participated in extemporary interpretation and simultaneous interpretation in various fields and interpreted for state leaders, provincial chiefs and foreign state guests. Fang was also responsible for administrating guest honors, external propaganda and foreign journalists.

Today, Fang is the Vice-CPC Secretary and Vice-President of GDUFS and in charge of personnel, finance, auditing, international communication, bureaucracy, as well as dismissals and retirements. He is also responsible for liaising with the Department of International Students and the School of Interpreting & Translation Studies

  • Vice-President, Gu Yeli

Gu Yeli was born in Dangdong, Liaoning Province in February 1955. He is a member of the Jiu San Society. He graduated from Liaoning Normal University majoring in Japanese. Upon graduation, he stayed at the university as a lecturer. After receiving his postgraduate degree in Japanese Language and Literature at Northeast Normal University, he was assigned to teach at Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages. In 2000, he was promoted to professor. Since 1987, he has worked in succession as Vice-Dean of the Japanese Teaching and Research Office of the Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures, Dean of the Faculty of Asian Languages and Cultures, Vice-Chairman of the Labor Union of GDUFS, Vice-Dean of the Standing Committee of Teaching and Administrative Deputies, Dean of the Office of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Admissions Office of GDUFS. Professor Gu is now Vice-President of GDUFS.

Professor Gu was invited to work as a Visiting Research Fellow at Hosei University, Japan, in 1988 and Yokohama National University, Japan, in 1990. In recent years, he published over 10 papers in domestic and international academic journals, edited and published nine books, dictionaries, textbooks and reference books.

Professor Gu is in charge of scientific research including research institutions and academic journals, research base, International Institute for Strategic Studies and Research Institute of International Service Outsourcing. Finally, his work includes supervision of and contacts with the School of English for International Business and the International College. He is responsible for liaising with the School of English for International Business and the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture.

  • Vice-President, Liu Jianda

Born in Ji'an, Jiangxi in 1967, Vice-President Liu Jianda obtained a B.A. Degree in English Language and Literature at Jiangxi Normal University. In 1994, he received his M.A. Degree in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at GDUFS. Ten years later, he became a Ph.D. in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at City University of Hong Kong, and participated in the post doctoral research under Professor Gui Shichun at GDUFS.

In 2006, he was recognized as a professor of English, and a year later, a doctoral supervisor. Meanwhile, he is also the head of training projects at universities in Guangdong. He used to be the chief of Education Department, and he is now the vice-president of GDUFS. As a renowned intellectual, his research direction is Language Testing and Pragmatic Acquisition, with a title of Research on Uncertain Behavior and Language Testing. He has also composed a series of treatises and essays, which are of high academic values.

He is also engaged in multifarious courses relating to his major, tutoring doctoral candidates, postgraduates, and undergraduates as well.

  • Vice-President, Shi Youqing

Shi Youqi, born in 1969 in Dawu, Hunan Province, received his college education at South Central Institute of Law (now, South Central University of Economics and Law), and has served the university since his graduation in 1996. He received an MA in law from South Central University of Economics and Law and a PhD in law from Peking University in 2002. He completed his postdoctoral research at Wuhan University during 2003 and 2006. He was promoted from associate professor to professor at South Central University of Economics and Law. He has participated in international academic activities in Korea, Germany and France. From 2005 to 2006, he went to University of Wales as a visiting scholar. His fields of specialty include administrative procedure law, civil servant law, and state compensation law.

Shi held the positions of doctoral advisor, deputy director of the Faculty of Law, director of the Faculty of Constitution and Administrative Law, deputy director of the Constitutional Theory Research Institute, deputy director and CPC member of the Postgraduate Department during his service at South Central University of Economics and Law, as well as deputy director of the Hubei Local Legislation Research Institute. He was awarded Excellent Young Jurist in Hubei (2006). He is now a Standing Committee member of the Party Committee and Vice-president of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

  • Vice-President, Chen Depin

Professor Chen Deping, born in 1958, is currently Vice-President of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. He obtained a Bachelor of Science from Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, a postgraduate Diploma in Management, and a doctoral Diploma in Economics. He attained accountancy qualifications as a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Tax Agent. He previously has served at Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics as Economic Department Dean, Academic Program Division Director, and professor. He was the Principal of Guangdong Finance and Economics College until joining GDUFS. He now also serves as the Trustee for the Accounting Society of China and as the Chair of the Guangdong Finance Society. In 1997, He went to the U.S. for further studieslearning Human Resource Management at the Economic Development Institute，the predecessor of the World Bank Institute.

Professor Chen Deping's main fields of research include finance, accounting, taxation, and private economy.[13]
