Halima Aden (born September 19, 1997) is an American fashion model. She is noted for being the first Somali-American to compete and become a semi-finalist in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant.[3] Following her participation in the pageant, Aden received national attention and was signed to IMG Models.[1]

Early life and education

Aden was born in a refugee camp in Kenya, and at the age of six moved to the United States, settling in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Halima classmates voted her in as her school prom homecoming queen. She is currently a first year student at St. Cloud State University.[4]

Career

In 2016 she competed in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant, becoming the first contestant in that pageant to wear a burkini and a hijab, a move that some analysts saw as a move towards diversification in the modeling industry.[5]

The following year, Aden was signed to IMG Models and has a three year contract with renewal. In February 2017, Aden made her debut at the New York Fashion Week for Yeezy Season 5.[6] She will be a preliminary and telecast judge of the Miss USA 2017 pageant.[7] She has since walked for numerous designers, including Maxmara (alongside Gigi Hadid, who is thought to be a Muslim) and Alberta Ferretti, among numerous smaller names. She has also participated in the 2016 Milan Fashion Week and London Modest Fashion Week. She has also posed for American Eagle, British Glamour, and has a CR Fashion Book cover.[citation needed]

She was the first hijab-wearing model to walk international runways and to be signed to a major agency.[8] In June 2017, she became the first hijab-wearing model on Vogue Arabia's cover.[9][10][11][12] She also became the first hijab-wearing model on an Allure cover, for their July 2017 issue.[13]

Personal life

Aden is a Muslim.[3]
