Schloss Herrenchiemsee

The island Herreninsel (old name: Herrenwörth), with an area of 238 hectares, is the biggest of the three main islands of the Chiemsee, a lake in the state of Bavaria, Germany. Together with the islands of Fraueninsel and "Krautinsel" it forms the municipality of Chiemsee.

Frauenchiemsee is inhabited by about 300 people but Herreninsel is inhabited by about 30 people. The island is famous for the palace of Herrenchiemsee built by Ludwig II of Bavaria who stayed only 9 or 10 nights on Herrenchiemsee.

Apart from the palace the island also consists of the Old Palace Herrenchiemsee, a former Augustinian monastery (Monastery Herrenchiemsee).
