Robert and Cortney Novogratz, known collectively as The Novogratz, are a husband and wife design team based in Los Angeles. They are parents to 7 kids: Wolfgang, Bellamy, Tallulah, Breaker, Five, Holleder, and Major. The Novogratz began their careers in Manhattan by flipping real estate and are now successful interior and product designers.

Early life[edit]

Robert grew up in Alexandria, VA (b. February 11, 1963) and Cortney in southern Georgia (b. September 8, 1971). Both were from large families and had parents who were decorating enthusiasts. The couple met in Charlotte, North Carolina, moved to New York City and got into the design world through real estate. Robert was a sports enthusiast.

They began their design career by renovating run-down properties in Manhattan. Their work combines the use of distinctive architectural details, unique interior finishes, and rare collectibles found while travelling to flea markets around the world. They are known for their distinctive style, which mixes vintage/modern high/low pieces. One of their featured works is 5 Centre Market Place, converted from a former gun shop located on the edge of Soho. In addition to Centre Market, the couple’s design of two properties, also in Soho, on Thompson Street sold for record prices. The Novogratz moved to Los Angeles in the fall of 2014, where they bought and renovated a home in the Hollywood Hills.

In addition to designing and renovating their personal homes, The Novogratz design private residences for A-list clients, as well as design boutique hotels. Boutique hotel jobs include Hotel Dylan, LULU's at the W Hoboken, Bungalow Hotel, and Timber Cove. The Novogratz recently completed a children's space at Ten Thousand, a luxury apartment building in Beverly Hills, CA, and are working on a 250 unit condominium in East Boston.

The Novogratz have successful product lines with CB2, The Shade Store, Walmart, Wayfair, Amazon, and Overstock, to name a few key retailers.

Personal Life Robert and Cortney have 7 children, Wolfgang (b.1997), Bellamy (b.1998), Tallulah (b.1998), Breaker (b.2000), Five (b.2005), Holleder (b.2005), and Major (b. 2009). Home by Novogratz[edit]

After the interest generated from 9 By Design, The Novogratz returned to television with a new show on HGTV, which showcased their celebrated unique design aesthetic. Season 1 of Home by Novogratz premiered on July 16, 2011. HGTV accurately describes the show's premise, “In each episode, Robert and Cortney take on a new design project and create totally unique, wildly original spaces that showcase their funky, downtown-chic aesthetic, their unpretentious design sensibility, and their self-taught, drop-dead gorgeous style. They'll learn on the job, pull together an eclectic mix of shopping finds and, in the end, present their client with a spectacular and totally customized room that surpasses every expectation”. The second season of Home by Novogratz premiered in 2012 and included renovations of spaces owned by Wendy Williams, Pioneer Woman, and Tony Hawk.

Downtown Chic[edit]

In May 2009 Robert and Cortney’s first book, Downtown Chic, was published worldwide from Rizzoli. It describes their signature style as a sophisticated but bohemian mix of high and low, new and old, and they offer realistic advice on how to create original, warm interiors with ease. One part practical guide, one part inspirational volume on creating a look for the home, the book pairs humorous anecdotes about the pitfalls and pleasures of renovation with a treasure trove of decorating tips: how to use both boutique and flea-market finds; how to inject lots of personality into a room affordably; how to decorate kids' rooms so they appeal to children and adults; how to easily rehabilitate outdated furnishings; and many more.

Home by Novogratz[edit]

In October 2012 Robert and Cortney's second book, Home by Novogratz, was published worldwide by Artisan. In the book, Robert and Cortney give an inside look at twenty of their favorite projects to show readers how to achieve their signature "vintage modern" style. It shows how the couple effortlessly mix contemporary furniture with thrift-store finds, and gives tips for creating a stylish home no matter what the obstacles: seven children, small spaces, or a tiny budget.

Beachside Bohemian: Easy Living By the Sea - A Designer Couple's Refuge for Family and Friends[edit]

In October 2016 Robert and Cortney's third book, Beachside Bohemian, was published worldwide by Rizzoli. It is dedicated to one of their favorite places to spend time with their family: their vacation home in the sleepy beach outpost of Trancoso, Brazil. Transforming a ramshackle house into a sanctuary for family and friends, the reader sees the Novogratzes' relaxed and family-focused style in its purest and most laid back form. Brimming with great decorating and entertaining ideas that easily translate from vacation vibe to "real life" back at home, the gracious couple excel at living well, in sandals and bare feet, and never sweating the small stuff. In addition to offering up terrific decoration suggestions for every room in the house and the outdoors (including a treehouse) they have advice on how to make a vacation home pay for itself - advising that small touches add up in big ways when creating the most enjoyable experience for guests and renters.
