The Institute of Fundamental Studies was established in September, 1981 by the Parliament Act No. 55 and shifted its location from Colombo to Kandy on 4 December 1985. The name of the institute was changed to National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) Sri Lanka by the Act No. 25 of 2014. NIFS is the only national institute, which, by its Act, has the main objective as to, engages in scientific research to facilitate fundamental and advanced studies with an emphasis on basic research for national development as well as for the advancement of science. NIFS also trains around 32 graduate students at any given time.

VISION
To be a world renowned center of excellence for research in fundamental studies.
MISSION
Initiate, promote and engage in advanced research in fundamental studies for the enhancement of scientific knowledge and development of human resources contributing to national development.

MANAGEMENT
NIFS is administered by a twelve-member Board of Governors with Prof. Anura Wickramasinghe as the Chairman. A Research council whose membership comprises university academics and researchers of the NIFS, serves as an advisory body. Currently, the research council comprises 21 prominent scientists.
