Jiangdong (simplified Chinese: 江东镇; traditional Chinese: 江東鎮, 23°36′N 116°40′E / 23.600°N 116.667°E / 23.600; 116.667) is a small town located in Chao'an District, Chaozhou City, Western Guangdong province, China.[1] Surrounding by water, it enjoys a humid climate and superior natural condition. As a result, it is known as the "water oasis". Because of the mild and humid climate, it is better to develop agriculture. And in Jiangdong, there are many well-known local products, such as Jiangdong Bamboo and the Dried Turnip. Moreover, one of the most famous food companies in this area is the Zhenmei Food Group Company, whose products are very popular and exported abroad.

Geography

Location

Jiangdong Town is located in the southeast of Chaozhou City, Guangdong province. Situated in the lower reaches of the Han River and surrounded by water, this town is commonly known as "oasis in the center of rivulet". Also its geographical position has great strategic significance. To the north, it can reach the downtown. However, it can lead to Chenghai District, Shantou City. Jiangdon Town is the transportation hub between Chaozhou City, Chenghai District and Shantou, a Special Economic Zone.

So far, until 2002, the town covers an area of 38.4 square kilometers, including about 15 square kilometers of farmland. With a total of 48 natural villages, the neighborhood committees have jurisdiction over 29 administrative villages. Besides, nearly 30 thousand people live abroad on the whole town.[2]

Agriculture

Climate

Jiangdong, located in the downstream of Han River, is an oasis with fertile soil sources and abundant water. With the appropriate climate, it is no doubt that this place is suitable for the development of agriculture.

According to the topography of the whole town, Jiangdong town was divided into two parts, the south part and the north part. Most of the soils in the north part belong to property of sediment. On the contrary, the cultivated land of the south part is more likely to be the clay. After all the town is so small that it does not cause many difference between them. Generally speaking, most of the crops are the same between these two parts.

Local Products

Big Bamboo Shoot

Jiangdong is always well known for its bamboo shoots.[3] First there is enough water, fertile soil and gentle climate. It is fit for growing the bamboo shoots. Therefore, the bamboo shoots are quite delicious for its fresh meat, nice smell and sweet taste. In Chaozhou, jiangdong is well known for the bamboo shoots, and Peng-hole village is one of the largest area in Jiangdong that planting bamboo shoots. It has more than several decades of history in Jiangdong planting trees. It is said that there is more than households among the whole 600 households planting bamboo shoots. In recent years, this village change its way from developing sporadic planting to large-scale cultivating. Therefore, it helps a lot to increase the total bio-yield and economics benefits.

Dried turnip is also one of the famous cuisines in Jiangdong, Chaozhou. In Chaoshan area, southern Fujian, Taiwan, Meizhou, fengshun and other regions are called the radish dry salted. Furthermore, together with fish sauce and pickle, these three are the most famous cuisine in Chaoshan.

Industry

Light Industry

Due to this town is so small and far away from the city center. It is rather to develop light industry than the heavy industry. There are several kinds of enterprises, such as drawnwork, clothing, crafts, construction materials, electrical appliances, ceramics and so on. And Guangdong Zhenmei Food Group Company is one of the famous food enterprise in Jiangdong, Chaozhou.

Zhenmei Food Group Company

Guangdong Zhenmei Food Group Company is one of the most famous enterprises in Jiangdong Town,which was founded in 1991.[4] It is a large-scale technology-based provincial-level leading agricultural enterprise integrating scientific research, breeding, processing. And with a registered capital of 33 million yuan, and existing fixed assets of 150 million Yuan. The Group has three affiliated companies, two research centers, one provincial-level agricultural science and technology innovation center, and four production plants. Company is located in the lower reaches of Hanjiang beautiful oasis JiangDong Town, where is the transportation junction among Shantou, Chaozhou city. The traffic is very convenient because it is about 30 minutes drive away from Chaoshan Airport and railway station. As Jiangdong Town is a natural inland island without industrial pollution, it is the most ideal choice for local food processing. Generally speaking, its products are export-oriented and are mainly sold to Hong Kong, Singapore and other southeast Asian regions and countries. Now the main products are tea, chicken feet, tea chicken wings, meat products and some other series products, such as meat, sweet pork floss and Candy with nearly 40 varieties series products.

Scenic Areas

Three-Yuan tower

Three-Yuan Tower is located in carp mountain of Jiangdong Town.[5] It is also known as the water tower, because it was done on rivers and streams where the water moves quickly. Its construction could date back to Ming dynasty, exactly in 1605 AD. This is an ancient tower which was made of masonry structure. It is 51 meters high, and has seven floors and eight sides. The base of the tower is made of granite stone. Over its surroundings, it was carved with tigers, lions and other animals. Moreover, the Hanjiang River just flows through in front of it. If you standing on it on a sunny day, you will get a bird's view of the beautiful scenes of Jiangdong county.
