Joe Sutter

Joseph F. "Joe" Sutter, born in 1921, was an engineer for the Boeing Airplane Company and chief engineer for the Boeing 747.[1] Sutter is often referred to as the "father of the 747."[2][3]

Biography

Early life

Sutter was born in Seattle, Washington and grew up in the vicinity of Boeing's Seattle plant.[3] He is of Slovenian descent - his father, Suhadolc, came to America because of gold fever.[4] Sutter attended the University of Washington, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1943.[2]

Career

Aside from his work at Boeing, Sutter served on a destroyer escort named the USS Edward H. Allen in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Later life

Sutter served on the Rogers Commission, investigating the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.[2] He was also selected as a recipient of The International Air Cargo Association's 2002 Hall of Fame Award and is now an engineering sales consultant.[5][6] Sutter also wrote his autobiography with Jay Spenser titled 747: Creating the World's First Jumbo Jet and Other Adventures from a Life in Aviation, which was published in 2006.[7] At age 87 in February 2009, he now resides in Hawaii.

Awards

For his contributions to the development of commercial jet aircraft, he was awarded the United States Medal of Technology in 1985.[8]
