John Savage (born John Smeallie Youngs; August 25, 1949)[1] is an American actor, best known for his roles in the films The Deer Hunter, The Onion Field, Hair and Salvador. He is also known for his role as Donald Lydecker in the TV series Dark Angel.[2][3]
Early life[edit]
Savage was born in Old Bethpage, New York, to Muriel (née Smeallie), a housewife, and Floyd-Jones Youngs, an insurance salesman who served on Guadalcanal during World War II with the Marine Corps.[4] His sisters are Boston-based radio and television personality Robin Young and actress Gail Youngs. His brother is actor Jim Youngs.[5]
Career[edit]
One of Savage's most notable roles is as Claude Bukowski in Miloš Forman's 1979 film Hair.[6][7] His first major film role was as Steven Pushkov in the 1978 film The Deer Hunter, the story of a group of Russian American steel workers during the Vietnam War, opposite Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken.[8] The film's 40th anniversary was celebrated in 2018.[9] He also had a lead role in the 1979 film The Onion Field, based on the true story of policeman Karl Hettinger's personal struggle after witnessing the murder of his partner.[10]

In the late 1970s, he performed in the Broadway production of David Mamet's play American Buffalo, opposite Robert Duvall and Kenneth McMillan.[11]
In 1991, he starred in Italian director Lucio Fulci's final film Door to Silence, a psychological thriller shot in Louisiana.[12] He then had a brief role in Terrence Malick's 1998 war film The Thin Red Line,[13] portrayed Captain Ransom in the two part episode Equinox from television series Star Trek: Voyager in 1999,[14] and appeared in the recurring role of Donald Lydecker in the first and second seasons of the 2000 television series Dark Angel.[15]
Shortly after, he appeared in the recurring role of Henry Scudder in the HBO television series Carnivàle between 2003 and 2005.[16] In 2005, he made a guest star appearance on NBC crime drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.[17] He lent his voice to a monologue on the title track of the album This Town by Steve Smith of Dirty Vegas which was released on February 18, 2008.[18] In September 2009, he appeared in the second episode of Season 2 of the Fox network drama Fringe.[19]
He starred in Vernon Mortensen's 2013 western thriller The Sorrow opposite Kirk Harris and Michael Madsen.[20] In 2015, he appeared in the horror film Tales of Halloween,[21] and the following year he played a supporting role in the 2016 film Hit List.[22] In 2017, he appeared in the films Fake News,[23] The Last Full Measure[24] and James Franco's In Dubious Battle,[25] and on the 2017 continuation of the television show Twin Peaks.[26] In 2018, he appeared on the television show Goliath.[27]
In 2017, Savage spoke at a tribute honoring director Richard Donner, held by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.[28]
