Thompson then accepted the position as defensive coordinator at Georgia State University. Thompson accepted the defensive coordinator position for the Arkansas State Red Wolves on February 25, 2012 under Head Coach Gus Malzahn. Coming in during the summer before the 2017 season, Coach Thompson managed to create a dominating defense in the state of Georgia, leading the team to a 14-1 record and the schools first state title over rival Marist. Coming back in year two, Thompson sought to reclaim the state title. The team finished with a 15-0 record and defeated Cartersville High School in the state championship, holding the high powered offense to zero touchdowns and three field goals on each of their three trips to the redzone. The Titans won the 2018 State Championship 23-9. Overall, Thompson helped lead the Titans to a 29-1 record over the 2 years as defense coordinator and back to back state titles.
