Kelly played junior football for Edithvale-Aspendale as well as representative football for the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup. Having studied at St.Bedes College from 2006-2009, Kelly transferred to Caulfield Grammar school in 2010 playing first XVIII football in year 11 and 12.
Kelly was selected by Hawthorn Football Club at pick #38 in the 2011 AFL Draft. He played 55 games for Box Hill in the VFL off a half-back flank. He played in the 2013 Box Hill premiership team.
Kelly, along with Ben Ross and Derick Wanganeen were delisted by Hawthorn on 9 October 2014. Unlike the latter two, Kelly was delisted without playing a single game for the Hawks. He was subsequently drafted by the Western Bulldogs in the 2015 rookie draft.
He was delisted at the conclusion of the 2015 AFL season.
