Kanji is a primarily liquid food, generally served warm or hot, that is made by combining ingredients such as rice, corn, ragi and wheat with water. Kanji, or kanji water, can be made from different rice varieties and is a comfort food. It can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner, with any chutney or poriyal, often with salt. It is liquid or semi-fluid.
Water can be poured into the leftover kanji and it can be eaten with the pickle for the next course. One serving (250 g) of Kanji contains 178 calories.
It is an ancient South Indian food which is popular even today. There is a proverb in Tamil which says "Kannathavan Kanjiya oothi oothi kudipan"(Meaning "if a person is starving for many days he will drink more kanji"). Ancient Tamil literature talks about kanji. There is also much information chiseled in the Temple walls about fasting and having Kanji. Ancient Tamil people followed "Unave Marunthu, Marunthe Unavu" which means "food is medicine, medicine is food". The dishes they prepared were totally wholesome. Still, Kanji is a staple food for an immense rural population. This comes from the authentic food of South India.
