Kayı (Kurdish: Hêdil,[2] Syriac: ܚܕܠ, romanized: Ḥidl)[3][nb 1] is a village in the İdil District of Şırnak Province in Turkey.[5] The village is populated by Kurds of the Omerkan tribe and had a population of 169 in 2021.[1][6] It is located in the historic region of Tur Abdin.[7]
The Monastery of Mar Basus is located near the village.[8]
History
[edit]Ḥidl (today called Kayı) is identified with the ancient town of Andulu, located in the Izalla region.[9] It was historically inhabited by Syriac Orthodox Assyrians.[10] In 1914, the village was populated by 100 Assyrians in 22 families, according to the Assyro-Chaldean delegation to the Paris Peace Conference.[11] Amidst the Sayfo, the villagers took refuge at Azakh and remained there until the end of the massacres.[12]
