Lali Kandelaki (Georgian: ლალი კანდელაკი) (born September 9, 1972) is a Georgian ballerina with the State Ballet of Georgia.[1]

Biography

Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Kandelaki graduated from Vakhtang Chabukiani Ballet Art State School under the tutelage of Vakhtang Chabukiani, Nina Didebulidze and Margarita Grishkevich.

Kandelaki’s debut on the Tbilisi Z.Paliashvili Opera and Ballet Professional State Theatre stage was in Sergei Prokofiev's Cinderella (staging by George Aleksidze). Soon her repertory expanded to new roles including Odette-Odile (Swan Lake), Gamzatti (La Bayadere), Javara (Gorda) and Kitri (Don Quixote).

Kandelaki is a laureate of the XIX Varna International Ballet Competition, where she achieved gold and the first prize in 2000.

In 1997 Kandelaki became principal dancer of the Mersin Opera and Ballet Theatre in Turkey. Until 2003 she played parts in N. Maghalashvili’s following stagings :Carmen( “Carmen Suite”), Bess (“porgy and Bess”), Giselle (“Giselle”), Medora (“Le Corasaire”), Scheherazade, Nurida (“One thousand and one nights”), Juliette ( “Romeo and Juliette”).[2]

In January 2003 she became a lead soloist of Budapest's “Art Ballet” (Gerard Michelle Bobotie Company).

Starting in September 2003 and continuing to the present she has been a prima ballerina at the Tbilisi Z.Paliashvili Opera and Ballet Professional State Theatre.

In 2008 she toured with the Royal Swedish Ballet in China, where her performance as Odette-Odile from Swan Lake reportedly included 32 double fouettés.[3]

Kandelaki was awarded the Georgian Order of Honor in 2009[4] and is recipient of the Vakhtang Chabukiani Medal.

From 2011 until 2013 Kandelaki was the company manager of the Tbilisi Z.Paliashvili Opera and Ballet Professional State Theatre.
