Langya henipavirus (LayV), also known as Langya virus, is a species of henipavirus first detected in the Chinese provinces of Shandong and Henan. It has been announced in 35 patients from 2018 to August 2022.[1][2] All but 9 of the 35 cases in China were infected with LayV only, with symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and coughing.[3] No deaths have been reported due to LayV so far.[3] Langya henipavirus affects humans as well as other animals species, including shrews - its presumed original host.[2][4] The 35 cases were not in contact with each other, and it is not yet known if the virus is capable of human-to-human transmission.[5]

Reactions

Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control called for the establishment of a nucleic acid testing method, in order to monitor the spread of the virus.[5]
