Burnley Football Club is an English professional association football club based in the town of Burnley, Lancashire. Formed on 18 May 1882, the team originally played only friendly matches until they entered the FA Cup for the first time in 1885.[1] Burnley went on to become one of the 12 founding members of the Football League in 1888 and have competed in the league ever since, with the exception of the 2009–10 season and 2014–15 season when they played in the Premier League. The following list contains all the footballers who have represented their country at full international level during this time.

Introduction

Burnley's first international was forward John Yates who appeared for England on 2 March 1889, in a 6–1 victory over Ireland in the 1888–89 British Home Championship. Yates scored a hat-trick on his debut, in what proved to be his only cap.[2] The most recent player to be capped whilst with Burnley is defender, Daniel Lafferty who played for Northern Ireland in a 2–0 defeat to Chile in June 2014.[3] Northern Irish forward Jimmy McIlroy is Burnley's most capped player, appearing in 51 games for his country between 1951 and 1962.[4] McIlroy is also the club's top international goalscorer, netting 10 times for Northern Ireland during his tenure with the Clarets.[4] Attacking midfielder Cameron Howieson became Burnley's youngest ever international in 2012 at the age of 17, making his debut for New Zealand in a 2–2 draw with El Salvador.[5]

The majority of Burnley players that have received international caps are for the home nations (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). The only decade that Burnley didn't have an international representative was during the 1990s. From the 2000s onwards the increasingly multinational nature of the team resulted in call-ups for players from across Europe (including Greece and Iceland) and also from the wider world (including New Zealand, Cameroon and Canada.) In 2001, Ian Cox became the first non-British player to be capped, appearing for Trinidad and Tobago in a 1–0 defeat to Morocco.[6]

Burnley have had a number of players who have represented their country in major international tournaments whilst at the club. The first Burnley player to go to a FIFA World Cup was Jock Aird, who represented Scotland in 1954.[7] In the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden, Jimmy McIlroy represented Northern Ireland and Colin McDonald was the goalkeeper for England.[4][8] Outside forward John Connelly and right-half Jimmy Adamson, were part of the England squad that went to the 1962 FIFA World Cup in Chile, however, they failed to make an appearance.[9] Billy Hamilton and Tommy Cassidy represented Northern Ireland at the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain.[10] Hamilton made five appearances and scored twice against Austria, and Cassidy played once as the side reached the second round.[11] André Bikey is Burnley's only ever African international and he represented Cameroon in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, making one appearance.[12] Defender David Edgar represented Canada at the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, however, he failed to make an appearance as he was a late addition to the squad.[13] Edgar made three appearances in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, as Canada exited in the group stage.[13] Cameron Howieson represented New Zealand at the 2012 OFC Nations Cup, making one appearance.[5]
