Goalscoring records[edit]

  • Lionel Messi holds the record for having scored the most goals in the Finals of the competition. He has scored four goals in three finals, one in 2009 against Estudiantes La Plata, where he scored the winner with his chest; two more in 2011 against Santos, where he opened and closed the score; and another one in 2015 against River Plate.[2][3][4]
  • Lionel Messi also holds the record for having scored in three different Finals of the competition, first in 2009, then in 2011 and again in 2015.[5][6][7]
  • Luis Suárez holds the record for having scored the most goals in one tournament; he scored a record five goals in 2015 in Japan.[8]
  • Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for having scored a hat-trick in the Final of the competition. He scored a hat-trick in 2016 against Kashima Antlers.
  • Luis Suárez and Cristiano Ronaldo hold the record for having scored the only hat-tricks in the competition's history.[9]
  • Ronaldinho holds the record for having scored the most direct free-kick goals in the history of the competition, with a total of three. In 2006, he scored his first one against Club América in the semi-final; in 2013, he scored his second against Raja Casablanca again in the semi-final; his last one came in the same year, in the match for the third place against Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao.[10]
