Star Trek: Discovery is an American television series created for CBS All Access by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman. It is the first series developed specifically for that service, and the first Star Trek series since Star Trek: Enterprise concluded in 2005. Set roughly a decade before the events of the original Star Trek series and separate from the timeline of the concurrently produced feature films, Discovery explores the FederationKlingon war while following the crew of the USS Discovery.

As of February 11, 2018, 15 episodes of Star Trek: Discovery have aired, concluding the first season. A second season is set to premiere on January 17, 2019. Leading up to that date, a spin-off series of shorts titled Short Treks are being released.

Star Trek: Short Treks[edit]

In June 2018, after becoming sole showrunner of Discovery, Kurtzman signed a five-year overall deal with CBS Television Studios to expand the Star Trek franchise beyond Discovery to several new series, miniseries, and animated series.[8] A month later, he announced a spin-off miniseries of shorts titled Star Trek: Short Treks to be released between the first two seasons of Discovery to explore characters from the main series further. Releasing monthly from October through to the January 2019 premiere of the second season of Discovery, the shorts are between 10 and 15 minutes long each and according to Kurtzman they "deliver closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what's to come in future Star Trek: Discovery episodes. The shorts will also introduce audiences to new characters who may inhabit the larger world of Star Trek. The four shorts include: an adventure with principal character Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) with appearances by her mother (Mimi Kuzyk) and a Xahean played by Yadira Guevara-Prip; a short starring Aldis Hodge as Craft, the only human on board a deserted ship; an exploration of principal character Saru (Doug Jones) and his backstory as the only Kelpien to join Starfleet; and one directed by Rainn Wilson, who also reprises his role from Discovery as Harry Mudd.[9][10][11][12] The four episodes are made available in the United States of America on CBS All Access[13] and broadcast in Canada the same day in English on Space before being streamed the following day on Crave.[14]

The USS Discovery, after drifting in space for a thousand years, has evolved to the point that its computer system has become sentient and named itself Zora. She retrieves a passing escape pod carrying a man named Craft. Zora reveals that she has been ordered to hold her current position for the past millennium. Zora initially keeps Craft aboard the ship (she wants company and is beginning to fall in love with him) but eventually lets him take Discovery's last shuttle to return to his home on Alcor IV.[15]

Young Saru, of the planet Kaminar, is curious and wants to learn about life outside the pre-warp society of his village. Unhappy with the knowledge that he, like all Kelpiens, will eventually be harvested as food by the predatory Ba'ul, Saru manages to send a distress signal into space, which is answered by the USS Shenzhou. Saru departs his homeworld with Lieutenant Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), with no guarantee of ever returning.
