This is a list of United States Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by time in office. This is based on the difference between dates; if counted by number of calendar days all the figures would be one greater. (Note that the list of popes by length of reign use numbers of calendar days.)

General Earle Wheeler, USA, is the only person to have served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for more than 4 years. General Maxwell D. Taylor, USA, is the only Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff ever to have served less than 23 months.

  • This list does not include Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy, USN, who served as Chief of Staff to the Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy for 2,436 days from 1942 to 1949. Leahy's position was the precursor to the position of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
  • This list does not include Admiral David E. Jeremiah, USN, who served as acting Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for 23 days in 1993 (between the conclusion of Colin Powell's term and the appointment of John Shalikashvili).
