This is a list of animated series featuring lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBTQ+) characters. This list includes fictional characters in animated cartoons, adult animation, and anime.

There is also a list of LGBT-related films, and a list of animated films with LGBT characters.

Harry Benshoff and Sean Griffin write that animation has always "hint[ed] at the performative nature of gender" such as when Bugs Bunny puts on a wig and a dress, he is a rabbit in drag as a human male who is in drag as a female.[1]

Within the Japanese anime and manga, yaoi is the tradition of representing same-sex male relationships in materials that are generally created by women artists and marketed mostly for Japanese girls[2] while the genre known as yuri focuses on relationships between women.

Some LGBT characters in animation are derived from graphic art works and video games.

During a program where troubled schoolchildren are sent to prison where they will learn what happens there at which Tom was chaperoning, Booty Warrior developed a lust for Tom and holds him hostage with a shank he stole from Tom (who took it from Riley prior to the field trip) in an attempt to rape him, and a riot ensues. Greg and Terry have a surrogate baby daughter, Liberty Belle. Before Libby's birth, Greg is panicky, questioning his ability and readiness to be a father, but immediately loves Libby upon holding her for the first time. Greg is the "power top" in his and Terry's relationship and was once involved in a heterosexual marriage, during a period of time in which he was "confused" and believed he was heterosexual. After thinking that Stan was beating Francine, she makes an awkward excuse to leave. Francine then says, "She's a weird chick." Linda's husband is apparently resigned to her preferences, and asks, in a defeated tone, if he can "at least watch this time" when he sees Linda eying Francine.

However, it was during an attempted "dress up" session that Kuro had her arguably greatest impact on her friend's life: her attempt to remove a dress that Aki had made by hand for Rin prompted the latter to emerge from her stupor for the first time to protest the action, marking the beginning of her long journey on the road to eventual recovery. While Kuro's attitude improved somewhat in the ensuing years, her friendship with Rin changed dramatically: the admiration and respect she developed for the strength of character that emerged in her friend eventually gave rise to an intimate attraction. In spite of this, she remains fiercely loyal and protective of Rin, a courtesy she extends to any individuals she considers her friends.[85] Her mother divorced her father after he cheated on her. This is the reason for Kuro's general distrust of men.[86]

Akira Hiragi Lesbian, Genderqueer The benevolent Governor of Mermaid, and the founder of Wärter (German for "keeper(s)"), the island's peace-keeping force. While believed by everyone on the island to be the only male resident on Mermaid, she is actually a woman asked by her mother to act like a man in order to stay safe. For physical protection, her mother also provided her with an artificial Extar named Sri. Only Torino and Mirei knew her true gender until she was exposed by Momoka. In an earlier episode (episode 7), with Mirei knocked out, Mamori has Akira drive with her in order to stop the terrorists, briefly exposing her identity to Mirei before leaving the scene. Furthermore, supplemental material revealed she was in a relationship with a woman named Haruka (who was her first Extar) in college, a relationship she still longs for as Mermaid's Governor.
Meifeng Sakura Pansexual A crafty girl who speaks Kansai dialect and is often seen wearing a partial cowboy outfit. She often holds bets and scams in order to make money which she can use to activate her Extar ability in the form of a golden mech suit. This evidently shows that she is sexually attracted to money. Charlotte Scharsen Lesbian She has a harem of Extars (other girls) – called the Adel ("nobility") – that she uses all at once when fighting her opponents. She strives to bring Mermaid under her thumb, but is later used (out of love attraction) as a willing puppet Governor by Momoka. Nimi Minimi and Noe Ōya Lesbian Nimi is an Extar who is partners with her girlfriend Noe. Rather than take the shape of a weapon, her Arm form causes her to grow to gigantic sizes. Earlier on, Noe gets arrested by the Wärter after Nimi runs away, as they were believed to be incompatible. After they release her, she and Nimi on some occasions are seen helping Mirei and Mamori in fights.
Momoka Sagara Lesbian The series' second main antagonist. Like Mirei, she is a Soldier (code name A3) and her former partner. She is sent to Mermaid alongside her allies in order to locate the source of the Valkyrie Effect. She also harbors a deep hatred of Mirei for "abandoning" her, which turned her into a homicidal maniac, and has volunteered herself for further enhancement; they enable her to transform her chosen Extar into any weapon of her choice and absorb A Virus carriers to enhance her Arm's power. This involved her using Charlotte for a period of time to expose Akira's true identity and crown Charlotte the new governor of the island. Momoka also tried to seduce Mamori into driving with her (which actually worked). In Episode 12, as the captives are attacked by tentacles that draw the Armed Virus out of them, providing Momoka with enough power to even destroy a satellite, Mirei manages to break free and reunite with Mamori, freeing her from Momoka's control and releasing the others. They defeat Momoka but it is also discovered that Mirei and Momoka did have a relationship in the past. Furthermore, in one of the OVA shorts, Momoka is seen being intimate with Mirei.
