Shah Rukh Khan (also credited as Shahrukh Khan) is an Indian actor, producer, playback singer, action director and television personality.[1] He began his career appearing in several television serials in the late 1980s and made his film debut in Deewana (1992) which won him the Filmfare Best Debut Award. The following year, he appeared in the critically acclaimed crime thriller Baazigar, for which he earned his first Filmfare Best Actor Award. Khan has won fifteen Filmfare Awards, and at eight wins, holds the record for the most Filmfare Best Actor Awards along with Dilip Kumar. He has also won six IIFA Awards, eight Zee Cine Awards of which six are for Best Actor (also a record), fourteen Star Screen Awards, three Bollywood Movie Awards, two Global Indian Film Awards and was nominated for Best Actor at the Asian Film Awards.

In addition to achieving merit honors, Khan has been awarded several national and international honours which include Best Indian Citizen Award in 1997,[2] the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award from the Government of India in 2005.[3] He was honoured with Rajiv Gandhi Award for "Excellence in the Field of Entertainment" in 2002. In April 2007, a life-size wax statue of Khan was installed at Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, London. There are also statues in Hong Kong and New York.[4][5] Another statue was installed at the Musée Grévin in Paris, the same year.[6]

During the same year, he was accorded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres award by the French government for his “exceptional career”.[7] The same year, Khan was conferred the honorific Datuk title by the head of state of Malacca in Malaysia, (in similar fashion to "Sir" in British knighthood).[8]He was also honoured with an honorary doctorate in arts and culture from Britain's University of Bedfordshire in 2009.[9] In 2011, he was honored with L’Etoile d’Or by Mohammed VI of Morocco, the King of Morocco during the 11th International Film Festival of Marrakech.[10] In 2012, Khan was honored with the Chubb fellowship at Yale University.[11] In 2014, he was conferred the Legion of Honour, France's highest civilian award. [12] Khan has also been, in 2008, named by Newsweek as one of the 50 most powerful people in the world.[13]

  • 2003 – A rare species of orchid, Ascocenda Shah Rukh Khan, was named after him in Singapore.[18]
  • 2004 – Time magazine selected him as one of 20 "Asian Heroes" under the age of 40 and was featured on the magazine's cover.[19]
  • 2004 – British Asian Guild Award for Best Actor of the Decade
  • 2005 – He was featured on the cover of the Asian edition of the National Geographic magazine twice, February's issue .[20]
  • 2007 – He was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of the Arts and Literature) by the French government for his “exceptional career”.[7]
  • 2007 – His lifelike wax statue was installed in London's Madame Tussauds wax museum. Additional versions were installed at Madame Tussauds museums in Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and New York in 2010.[4][5]
  • 2007 – Another lifelike wax statue was displayed in Grévin museum in Paris, along with that of Gandhi, the only other Indian to receive a similar honor.[6]
  • 2008 – He was conferred the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka, which carries the honorific Datuk, by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob, head of state of Malacca in Malaysia, for "promoting tourism in Malacca" by filming One 2 Ka 4 there in 2001.[8]
  • 2008 – Newsweek named him one of the 50 most powerful people in the world, ranking him at number 41. He was the only artist and the only movie-star in the list. Newsweek subtitled his article as "The king of Bollywood is opening minds in some closed-off cultures" and noted, "Who is the world's biggest movie star? Brad? Will? Nah. His name is Shahrukh Khan, and he's the king of Bollywood."[13]
  • 2009 – He was invited to present the motion picture Slumdog Millionaire at the 66th Golden Globe Awards. No Indian actor had previously been invited to present at the Golden Globe Awards.[21]
  • 2009 – He was awarded with an honorary doctorate in arts and culture by the University of Bedfordshire [9]
  • 2009 – He was given a Black Belt Honorary in taekwondo by the South Korean government.[22]
  • 2009 – He was declared amongst the 500 most influential Muslims worldwide by Georgetown University.[23]
  • 2010 – Was invited by NASDAQ, the world's biggest stock exchange, to ring their opening bell in New York, along with Kajol, for the promotion of My Name Is Khan, thus become the first Indian actors to open the market, an honour usually reserved for CEOs of major corporations.[24]
  • 2010 – He was recognized as an icon of religious unity by experts from around the world at a conference at Vienna University.[25]
  • 2010 – He became the first Indian actor to be given the rare honour of signing the guest book at Berlin's Town Hall.[26]
  • 2010 – Entertainment Weekly states in their Most Powerful List that Khan is the "megastar" of Bollywood.[27]
  • 2011 – He became the first Bollywood actor to be featured on the cover page of Los Angeles Times Calendar section. Shahrukh's films My Name Is Khan and Ra.One have been noticed and appreciated by the American media outlet.[28]
  • 2011 – He was honored with the Unesco Pyramide con Marni award for his charity engagements and social commitment towards providing education for kids. Shah Rukh is the first Indian to win this accolade.[29]
  • 2011 – He was honored with L’Etoile d’Or by Mohammed VI of Morocco the King of Morocco during Eleventh International Film Festival of Marrakech. Shah Rukh is the first Indian to receive the honor.[10]
  • 2012 – He became the first Bollywood personality to be honoured with the prestigious Chubb fellowship at Yale University.[11]
  • 2012 – He was honoured with the prestigious Brand Laureate Legendary Award for his unmatched contribution to the Indian Cinema and also for being India's foremost brand ambassador in Malaysia.[30]
  • 2012 – He was conferred with one of Morocco's highest honours (a rare state honour, Wissame Al Kafaa Al Fikria (award of intellectual merit)) while attending the 12th International Film Festival of Marrakech by Prince Moulay Rachid.[31]

Filmfare Awards[edit]

The Filmfare Awards are presented annually to honour both artistic and technical excellence of professionals in the Hindi language film industry of India. The ceremony was first introduced in 1954 and is one of the oldest and most prominent film awards given for Hindi films in India. The Filmfare Awards have been often referred to as Hindi film industry's equivalent to the Oscars. Khan has received fifteen (15) awards, eight (8) of which are in Best Actor category, a record shared with Dilip Kumar and two (2) are Critics Award for Best Actor. Out of the fifteen (15), three (3) are Special Awards: two (2) Filmfare Power Awards (2004, 2005) according to the Filmfare Power List and one (1) Filmfare Special Award Swiss Consulate Trophy (2002).

Screen Awards[edit]

The Screen Awards is an annual awards ceremony in India initiated in 1994, honoring professional excellence in film. It is the only awards ceremony in India to be involved with the Executive Director and the Governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Khan has won seventeen awards including four wins for Best Actor, five wins for Best Actor (Popular Choice), seven wins for Jodi No. 1 and Screen Award for Best Jodi of Decade (along with Kajol).

IIFA Awards[edit]

The International Indian Film Academy Awards, also known as the IIFA Awards are presented annually by the International Indian Film Academy to honour both artistic and technical excellence of professionals in Bollywood, the Hindi language film industry. They were first instituted in 2000. Khan has received six awards, four of which are in Best actor category (a record shared with Hrithik Roshan) from twelve nominations. He has also won the Digital Star award at 14th IIFA award 2013 for Jab Tak Hain Jaan.

The Zee Cine Awards or "ZCA" for short is an awards ceremony for the Hindi film industry. It was first held in 1998 in Mumbai. It was not held in 2009 or 2010, but resumed in 2011. Khan has won ten awards, including six for Best actor (a record) from twenty three nominations.
