What it started as a pagan celebration, it became one of the most celebrated festivities throughout the country. Family and friends gather together for this celebrations. There are parades on the streets of "la sierra" (the highlands) and "la costa" (the coast) People celebrate by throwing water at each other, "carioca" (a nonstaining foam) sprayed at friends or random people. They also celebrate with food, drinks and dances at their homes or outside on their neighborhoods. This is a great festivity that everyone celebrate rich or poor.
