This is a list of earthquakes in 1936. Only magnitude 6.0 or greater earthquakes appear on the list. Lower magnitude events are included if they have caused death, injury or damage. All dates are listed according to UTC time. Indonesia and China in particular had the main bulk of the activity in this year. Indonesia saw six of the 17 magnitude 7.0+ events. China on the other hand had six earthquakes which resulted in substantial numbers of deaths during the year. In a stark contrast Central America and southern Europe were extremely quiet.

  • South Korea A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck South Jeolla Province, South Korea on July 3 at an unknown depth. Nine people were killed and heavy damage was reported.[65]
  • Peru A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Tacna Region, Peru on July 4 at a depth of 140.0 km.[66]
  • Indonesia A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the Malacca Strait on July 4 at a depth of 200.0 km. This came within five minutes of the Peru quake.[67]
  • Philippines A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck southeast of Mindanao, Philippines on July 5 at a depth of 35.0 km.[68]
  • Chile A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Antofagasta Region, Chile on July 13 at a depth of 35.0 km. One person died and a further 40 were hurt. Many homes were destroyed in the area.[69][70]
  • Chile A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Antofagasta Region, Chile on July 26 at a depth of 35.0 km.[71]

  • China A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Gansu Province, China on August 1 at a depth of 35.0 km. One-hundred and fifteen people died, 31 were hurt, and 4,459 homes were destroyed.[72][73]
  • Philippines A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck east of Mindanao, Philippines on August 13 at a depth of 35.0 km.[74]
  • Colombia An earthquake struck near Pasto, Colombia on August 14. The magnitude and depth were unknown. Eighteen deaths were reported.[75]
  • China A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Yunnan Province, China on August 17 at an unknown depth. Thirty people were killed and many homes were destroyed.[76]
  • Taiwan A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck southeast of Taiwan on August 22 at a depth of 35.0 km. Ten people were killed with a further 10 injured. Fifteen homes were destroyed.[77][78]
  • Indonesia A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia on August 23 at a depth of 35.0 km. Nine people were killed and 20 more hurt. Some damage was reported.[79][80]
  • A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the Southeast Indian Ridge on August 24 at a depth of 35.0 km.[81]
