Notes[edit]

  1. ^ On June 16, 2017, American singer Katy Perry became the first account to exceed 100 million followers.[2]
  2. ^ On July 12, 2018, Twitter purged locked accounts—those disabled due to suspicious activity—from follower-count tallies.[3] Consequently, Twitter's own account took the fastest and greatest plunge out of all the top 50 accounts, from 63 million to 55 million followers, and in ranking, from 11th to 16th place.[4]
  3. ^ On February 3, 2019, American singer Demi Lovato deleted her Twitter account after facing backlash on the platform. She was the 14th most-followed account at the time, with over 57 million followers.[5] On January 14, 2020, she had reactivated her account and started tweeting again under the new name, "Team Demi".[6] In July 2020, her account was changed back to "@ddlovato".
