This is a List of road accidents records. These are serious road accidents that caused a high death toll,[clarification needed] occurring in unusual circumstances,[clarification needed] or hold some other historical significance. The prevalence of bus accidents in this list is a function of severity rather than of frequency.

2010[edit]

  • Nigeria February 13 — A power line broke in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, striking two buses and killed 10 of the occupants.[1]
  • Italy February 16 — A bus crashed and went down an embankment near the town of Massa, Italy. The accident killed three French people and 20 were injured.[2]
  • India February 17 — A bus with wedding guests crashed into a river in Jalaun District, India, killing at least 22 people with at least another 10 people unaccounted for.[3]
  • Peru February 22 — Two buses collided head-on on the Panamerican Highway near Virú, Peru, killing 38.[4]
  • Indonesia February 26 — At least 3 people were killed and 2 injured in car accident at Jakarta, Indonesia.[5]
  • United States March 5 — A bus overturned near Phoenix, Arizona killing 6 and injuring 15.[6]
  • Nepal March 18 — A crowded bus veered off a mountain road in Nepal and plunged into a river just west of Kathmandu, killing 24.[7]
  • United States March 27 — A crash between a van and a tractor-trailer on Interstate 65 south of Munfordville, Kentucky killed 11.[8]
  • United Kingdom March 31 — A coach crashed into a river after falling from a bridge in a snow storm in Lanark, Scotland killing a 17-year-old girl and injuring 44 passengers.[9]
  • United States April 12 — A multiple-vehicle crash on a rain-slicked freeway north of Los Angeles killed 5.[10]
  • Pakistan April 16 — A bus fell into a river on Haramosh Peak, Pakistan. The accident killed 12 and injured 7.[11]
  • China May 23 — A truck travelling in the wrong direction on an expressway in China's north-east collided head-on with a bus. The collision occurred on a section of expressway that was undergoing maintenance in the city of Fuzin in Liaoning province. Thirty-two people were killed and twenty-one were injured and sent to the hospital.[12]
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo July 2 — A fuel tanker overturned and exploded, creating a fireball that devastated the town of Sange, in South Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The preliminary death toll placed the number of dead at 220, with 111 injured.[13]
  • South Korea July 3 — A bus fell from a bridge near Incheon International Airport in Korea, killing 12 people.[14]
  • Republic of Ireland July 11 — A traffic accident, near Inishowen, in Ireland killed eight people.[15]
  • Albania July 18 — Fourteen people were killed and twelve injured after a bus fell off a cliff in northern Albania, near the city of Durrës.[16]
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo August 12 — Fifty-eight died when a lorry plunged into Lake Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of Congo.[17]
  • Philippines August 18 — In the Philippines, a fully packed bus plunged off a mountain highway into a 100 foot (≈30.5 m) ravine killing 41 people.[18]
  • South Africa August 25 — At least 8 children were killed and 4 were injured when a school bus collided with a train.[19]
  • Germany September 26 — A Polish tourist bus returning from Spain careered into a bridge on a rain-soaked German motorway killing 13 people.[20]
  • Malaysia October 10 — Twelve people were killed and more than fifty were injured in a highway crash that involved two buses, three cars, and a van at the North-South Expressway, near the Malacca-Negeri Sembilan state border, Malaysia.[21][22]

  • Guatemala January 9 — At least 14 people were killed and 50 injured in a bus crash in Guatemala.[27]
  • China January 12 — At least 16 people were killed and 23 injured when a bus collided with a car on a highway in Henan province.[28]
  • Pakistan January 23 — At least 32 people were killed and 9 injured after a bus collided with an oil tanker in Pakistan.[29]
  • Russia January 29 — At least 6 people were killed in car crash in Khabarovsk Krai.[30]
  • Thailand February 21 — At least 14 people were killed and 23 injured in bus crash in Thailand.[31]
  • Peru February 26 — At least 22 were killed and 39 were injured when a bus plunged into ravine.[32]
  • Afghanistan April 28 — At least 21 were killed and 23 injured when a bus flipped over on the main Kabul-Kandahar highway in Zabul Province.[33]
  • United States March 12 — A bus crashed on Interstate 95 in the Bronx, New York. Fifteen people were killed.[34]
  • Peru April 2 — At least 20 people were killed and another 47 injured after a bus fell into a 200-meter ravine.[35]
  • Germany April 8 — Due to very low visibility in a dust/sand storm, 80 cars piled up in a mass crash on the Autobahn A19 in Germany, 30 caught fire. 8 people died and 131 were injured.[36]
  • Chile April 15 — At least 14 people were killed, including two children, and 17 were injured when a bus went off the road and fell off a five-meter high drop.[37]
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo April 19 — At least 32 people were killed after a truck hit a group of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Most of the fatalities were children. The driver was seriously injured.[38]
  • Afghanistan May 14 — At least 21 were killed, including 15 children, when a bus plunged into a canal in Balkh Province.[39]
  • Nigeria May 15 — Two passenger buses hit each other in the northern Nigerian state of Yobe. At least 18 people were killed and 11 were injured. The accident occurred when one of the buses collided into an oncoming passenger bus, causing a fire to break out in the first vehicle.[40]
  • Indonesia June 26 — A passenger bus crashed on the Indonesian Island of Sumatra and killed 14 people when it plunged from a hill into a ditch with water.[41]
  • Russia July 17 — At least 5 people were killed, including two children, and 19 were injured as a result of a collision between a passenger bus and a truck in Tomsk Oblast.[42]
  • Bangladesh July 28 — A bus collided head-on with a truck in Bangladesh, killing at least 17 people and injured 30.[43]
  • Afghanistan August 20 — At least 35 people were killed and several injured in a bus crash in southern Afghanistan.[44]
  • Kenya August 21 — At least 23 people were killed when a bus plunged into a river.[45]
  • South Africa — At least 16 were killed, including 15 children, and 42 injured when a school bus plunged into the water in Knysna, Western Cape Province.[46]
  • Cameroon August 29 — At least 28 people were killed in a collision between a bus and a truck.[47]
  • Nigeria 31 August — At least 30 people were killed in road accident.[48]
  • Indonesia September 12 — At least 19 were killed in bus accident in East Java.[49]
  • Brazil September 15 — Rodovia dos Imigrantes Highway at São Paulo, Brazil. 300 vehicles were involved in an accident due to heavy fog, causing several injuries and killing one person.[50]
  • Peru October 6 — At least 10 were killed, including 4 children, in bus accident.[51]
  • Chile October 12 — Due to fog and smoke causing low visibility, a collision involving 23 trucks, 11 buses and 17 cars occurs on Route 68 near Casablanca, Chile, 67 km west of Santiago, in Valparaíso Region. At least 73 were injured and 5 people died.[52]
  • Nepal October 13 — At least 42 people where killed in bus accident.[53]
  • Mexico October 24. At least 10 were killed and 16 injured after a bus fell into in a ravine.[54]
  • Ecuador October 28 — At least 11 children were killed and 24 children were injured when a school bus fell into a ravine.[55]
  • Hungary November 1 — At least 14 Romanians were killed in a collision between a truck and a minibus.[56]
  • Argentina November 2 — At least 7 were killed, including 5 girls, in a collision between a school bus and a train.[57]
  • United Kingdom November 4 — A 34-vehicle crash near Taunton, England on the M5 motorway resulted in 7 dead and 51 injured.[58][59]
  • Egypt November 6 — At least 11 Hungarian tourists were killed and 27 were injured in a bus accident.[60]
  • Togo November 26 — The team bus of the Étoile Filante football team crashed. 6 were killed and 25 were injured.[61]
  • Ghana November 26 — At least 30 were killed in a collision between two buses.[62]
  • Brazil December 3 — A truck collided with a bus in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The crash killed 33 people.[63]
  • Tanzania December 6 — At least 6 were killed and 20 were injured in a bus accident.[64]
  • Thailand December 7 — At least 8 were killed and 50 were injured in bus accident in Thailand.[65]
  • Algeria December 7 — At least 7 people were killed and 22 injured in a bus accident.[66]
  • Kenya December 18 — A bus and a tanker collided in Kenya and killed 8 people.[67]
  • Malaysia December 20 — At least 8 Brunei tourists were killed when a bus hit a tree in Malaysia.[68]
  • South Africa December 27 — At least 19 killed when a minibus taxi collided with a car.[69]
  • Venezuela December 29 — At least 14 die when a tanker collided with a bus.[70]
  • Thailand December 31 — At least 12 killed and 4 injured in a collision between a bus and a truck.[71]

2012[edit]

  • India January 2 — At least 10 children, ages five to eight, and a driver were killed when bus collided with a truck in Haryana state.[72]
  • Haiti January 16 — A truck collided with other vehicles and street vendors in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, killing 29 people and injuring 67.[73]
  • Ethiopia January 17 — Forty-three people were killed in Ethiopia when a bus fell 80 metres (≈260 ft) into a gorge north of the capital of Addis Ababa.[74]
  • Ukraine January 20 — At least nine people were killed and eight others injured when a minibus collided with a truck in western Ukraine's Rovno Region.[75]
  • United States January 29 — Eleven people were killed in multi-vehicle pile-up on Interstate 75 near Gainesville, Florida. Fog and smoke from a brush fire reducing visibility was given as its cause.[76]
  • Iraq February 3 — Twelve people died in a collision of seven cars on the road between Balad an Samarra districts in Salahuddin province.[77]
  • Kenya February 4 — Twenty-six people were killed in a road accident in Kenya involving two mini buses along the KisumuKakamega Highway. It was blamed on a police road block at a blind spot during the night.[78]
  • Canada February 6 — Eleven people were killed in an accident between a van carrying migrant workers and a transport truck near Stratford, Ontario.[79]
  • Kenya February 12 — Ten people were killed in Kenya when a mini bus plunged into a ditch along the NairobiNakuru highway.[80]
  • Kenya March 2 — Nine students were killed and more than forty injured when a truck lost control near Bungoma, Kenya and went into a crowd.[81]
  • Switzerland March 13 — Sierre coach crash: 28 people were killed, 22 of whom were children, and 24 injured, when a coach ran into a tunnel wall near Sierre in Switzerland.[82]
  • United Kingdom March 24 — In a collision between a lorry and a coach on the M5 motorway one coach passenger died and 39 others were injured, two critically including the driver of the lorry who subsequently died.[83][84]
  • Algeria March 25 — At least 19 were killed and 30 injured in bus accident.[85]
  • Kenya April 2 — At least 12 were killed in bus accident in Kenya.[86]
  • Nepal April 7 — At least 5 were killed in a collision between a jeep and a bus.[87]
  • Zimbabwe April 16 — At least 12 were killed in bus accident.[88]
  • Mexico April 20 — A trailer truck collides with an overloaded passenger bus in Álamo, Veracruz, killing 43 people and injuring 18.[89]
  • Netherlands April 21 — 3 were killed including 1 child in an accident in Ouddorp.[90]
  • Ukraine April 23 — At least 6 were killed and 10 injured after a bus collided with a truck.[91]
  • Japan April 29 — Seven people were killed and thirty-eight were injured when a coach ran into a highway wall in Gunma Prefecture in Japan.[92]
  • Afghanistan April 29 — Eight people, including six children, were killed and two injured when car hit a passenger bus in the Adraskan District, Herat Province.[93]
  • Pakistan May 3 — At least 17 people were killed, including 2 children, and were 19 injured in a bus accident in Pakistan.[94]
  • Italy May 5 — At least 5 were killed and 10 injured in bus accident in Italy.[95]
  • Kazakhstan May 8 — Sixteen were killed in a road accident in the central Karaganda region of Kazakhstan.[96]

  • Albania May 21 — At least 11 Albanian university students were when their bus plunged into a gorge near the town of Elbasan.[100]
  • South Africa May 26 — At least 5 were killed and 87 injured in bus accident in South Africa.[101]
  • Norway May 28 — At least 2 were killed in bus accident in Norway.[102]
  • Cambodia May 31 — At least 7 were killed and 18 injured in a collision between a bus and a police truck.[103]
  • South Africa June 2 — At least 9 people were killed and 45 injured after a minibus collided with a bus.[104]

  • Turkey June 12 — At least 7 people, including a child, were killed when a passenger bus skidded off the road into a wooded area.[108]
  • Croatia June 23 — Eight Czechs were killed in a bus crash in Croatia.[109]
  • Argentina June 26 — A triple collision between a truck and two passenger buses caused 12 fatalities and 53 injuries in Chubut Province, Argentina.
  • Bolivia June 26 — At least 7 died and 8 injuries occurred when a minibus collided with a cargo truck.[110]
  • Nepal June 26 — At least 10 people were killed and 5 seriously injured in micro bus accident.[111]
  • Peru June 27 — At least 13 people were killed and 40 injured when a bus plunged 70 meters into a ravine.[112]

  • United States July 22 — Fifteen were killed when the Ford F250 pickup truck they were riding in collided with two trees in Goliad, Texas. Only the driver, a Mexican, carried identification; the rest were apparently illegal Hispanics. Nine passengers survived.[127]
  • Poland July 30 — Nine people were killed and one person seriously injured after a train and a minibus collided in the Polish town of Bratoszewice.[128]

  • Ghana November 16 — Twenty-nine people were killed when a Metro Mass bus and a Benz bus had a head-on collision at Kogni, Ghana on the Tamale-Bolgatanga road.[169]
  • Egypt November 17 — A school bus is hit by a train. At least 50 children and the bus driver died in the crash.[170]
  • Russia November 19 — At least 3 were killedand several injured by car that crashed into bus stop in Moscow.[171]
  • United States November 22 — Two people were killed and 120 were injured in a 100 car pile up on Interstate 10 just outside Beaumont, Texas.[172]
  • Ukraine November 23 — Four people were killed and seven were injured when the minibus they were riding in collided with a car in the Dnipropetrovsk region. In another accident in Luhansk region, two people died and seven others were injured after a bus carrying 10 people went off the road and fell into a ditch.[173]
  • Italy November 24 — Six people died when a regional train slammed into a car that was crossing the tracks near the southern city of Cosenza.[174]
  • India November 24 — At least 16 people were killed and 45 were injured after a passenger bus fell into a deep gorge in Kashmir.[175]
  • Indonesia November 30 — At least 7 people were killed and 9 were injured when a minibus plunged into a valley in Aceh province.[176]
  • Colombia December 17 — At least 27 people were killed and 15 injured in a bus accident in Colombia.[177]
  • Nigeria December 18 — A truck veered out of control in the Sokoto State and plunged into a river, killing 27 men.[178]
  • Sudan December 20 — At least 33 people were killed and 24 injured when two inter-city buses collided in Sudan. A passenger bus and a minibus crashed near the community of El Kamlien, about halfway between Khartoum and Wad Medani.[179]
  • Indonesia December 22 — At least 7 passengers of a tour bus were killed in a crash with a truck in West Java, Indonesia.[180]
  • China December 24 — At least 11 children were killed after van fell into a pond in Jiangxi.[181]
  • United Kingdom December 25 — Two boys, aged 4 and 10, and a woman died in a crash on the M6 motorway in Staffordshire.[182]
  • Ecuador December 26 — At least 13 people died and 37 were injured when a bus felt into a ravine in Tungurahua Province in Ecuador.[183]
  • Nigeria December 27 – At least 9 people were killed and 11 were injured when a bus collided with a truck in Nigeria.[184]
  • Moldova December 28 — At least 4 people died and 21 were injured when two buses collided in Hîncești District.[185]
  • Nepal December 28 — A bus veered off a mountain road and plunged into a river in western Nepal. At least 13 people were killed and 19 were critically injured.[186]
  • United States December 31 — A bus in northern Oregon skidded on ice, crashed through a guardrail and tumbled a couple hundred feet down an embankment killing nine people and injuring at least 26.[187]

  • Senegal January 2 — At least 18 people were killed and 16 others injured when a minibus and a packed coach collided in western Senegal.[188]
  • Russia January 3 — At least 7 people died when three cars collided in Yaroslavl Oblast.[189]
  • Russia January 3 — At least 5 people were killed and 2 injured when two vehicles collided in Saratov Oblast. In another accident a passenger bus and a car collided in Leningrad Oblast, killing at least 4 people.[190]

  • Canada April 28 – 6 people, including 2 children and 3 adults from the same family, are ultimately killed when a minivan ran a red light and collided with a car, in Surrey, British Columbia. The driver of the minivan initially survived, but later died due to complications during surgery on a brain tumour.[239] The previously-undiagnosed tumour was believed to be a factor in the crash.[240]
  • Mexico May 7 — 27 people were killed and 36 injured after a tank truck driver lost control of it and ran into several cars and houses before it exploded on Federal Highway 85 in Ecatepec de Morelos, Mexico.[241]

  • India October 3 — A cargo truck crashed into two minivans loaded with laborers headed to work northeast India about 160 kilometers (100 miles) west of Gauhati, the capital of Assam state. 28 were killed, including 13 children. Another 20 people were injured.[267]
  • Mexico October 4 (Friday) morn — Bus fell into a ravine in south-central Mexico; 14 people killed.[268]

  • Pakistan April 19 — A speeding passenger bus smashed into a tractor-trailer, leaving 42 dead in Sukkur, Sindh, Pakistan.[310]
  • Hungary June 8 – 5 people died when their car crashed in Győrtelek. The car veered to the opposite lane of the road and crashed frontally with a bus and then with a van. Four people in the bus and one travelling in the van suffered light injuries.[311][312]

  • Pakistan November 11 — 58 people were killed, including 19 children all age 14 and 21 women when a coach collided with a truck in Sindh.[323]
  • Nepal November 20 — At least 47 people died when a coach swerving to avoid a tractor plunged into the Bheri River about 400 kilometres (250 mi) west of the capital, Kathmandu.[324]

2015[edit]

  • Ukraine January 5  — A bus and a truck collided near Minkivka, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. At least 13 servicemen were killed and at least 20 were injured in a collision.[328][329][330]
  • United States January 9  — One man was killed and 23 people were injured in a pileup involving 193 vehicles on Interstate 94 near Galesburg, Michigan amidst a heavy snowstorm. One semi truck was carrying a load of fireworks, which caught fire and exploded, injuring two firefighters.[331]
  • Pakistan January 10  — At least 62 people died in a collision between a bus and oil tanker in Sindh, Pakistan. The bus carried 62 people inside and 10 on the top, most of them sleeping at the time of the collision.[332] Only traveling a small distance, the bus crashed in the outskirts of Karachi on a single track road that connects to the Super Highway. One of the factors was careless driving as the driver of the tanker, who eventually survived but fled the scene, was speeding on the wrong side of the road that suffered from poor conditions.[333] Immediately after the crash, a gas cylinder ignited, causing the bus to catch on fire. The heat melted some of the metal frame on the bus, causing rescuers to cut open the vehicle to obtain some of the bodies.[334]
  • United States January 14  — At least ten people died and five injured when a bus carrying prisoners skidded off the road and collided with a train near Odessa in West Texas.[335]
  • Malaysia January 15  — A tour bus overturns and catches fire on the North-South Expressway in the Malaysian town of Tapah leaving at least 8 people killed and 22 others injured.[336]
  • Vietnam February 9  — Two buses crash head-on in Bình Thuận’s Hàm Thuận Nam District, Viet Nam, killing 10 people and injuring 9 others.[337]
  • South Korea February 11  — 106-car pileup on Yeongjong Bridge in Incheon, South Korea. 2 men died and more than 65 people were injured.[338]
  • Mexico February 13  — A bus crashes with a freight train in the Mexican state of Nuevo León, killing at least 16 people and another 30 were wounded.[339]
  • Tanzania March 11  — A bus and two lorries collided in Tanzania's highland region of Iringa, killing 41 people, and hospitalising 21.[340]
  • Brazil March 15  — 51 people died and 7 were injured when a tourist bus left the road and plunged approximately 100 metres (330 ft) near the city of Joinville in Santa Catarina state, Brazil.[341][342]
  • United States September 24 — Five people were killed[343] and fifty were injured when an amphibious "duck tour" vehicle crashed into a charter bus on the Aurora Bridge in Seattle, Washington.
  • United Kingdom October 3 — A Stagecoach bus crashed into a Sainsbury's supermarket in Coventry city centre in West Midlands, United Kingdom. At least two people have died and several more have been injured. The incident happened on Hale Street at about 18:00.[344][345]
  • France October 23 — A bus carrying elderly day-travelers hit a truck head-on and caught fire. The bus and the truck collided near a forested bend on a two-lane road cut into a hillside near Puisseguin in the Gironde region, about 60 km (35 miles) east of Bordeaux. At least 43 people have been killed, and 8 people injured.[346]
  • Argentina December 14 — A bus carrying Argentine frontier police plunged off a bridge in rural northern Argentina, killing 43 people on board and injured other 7 people.

  • Mexico January 10 — Twenty people are killed after a bus carrying amateur football players and fans plunges into a river in Veracruz, eastern Mexico.[347]
  • Cambodia January 12 — Five people are dead and 65 people are injured after trucks carrying garment workers crash in Cambodia's Kampong Speu Province.[348]
  • Japan January 15 — A tour bus carrying skiers runs off the road in Japan's Nagano Prefecture with at least 14 people dead and injuring another 27.[349]
  • Egypt January 17 — At least five people are killed and ten injured in a microbus crash in Egypt's New Valley Governorate.[350]
  • Egypt January 31 — Seven people are killed after a truck collides with a train near Cairo, Egypt.[351]

  • Oman March 1 – At least 18 people are killed and 16 others injured in a multi-vehicle accident involving a bus near Nahdah in northwestern Oman. Six of the dead were from Oman, four from Saudi Arabia, two from Pakistan, and one from Yemen. Five others are unidentified.[358]
  • United States March 4 – At least 15 people were injured in traffic pileup on Interstate 93 in New Hampshire.[359]
  • Japan March 17 – At 2 people are dead and almost 70 injured following a pileup inside of a tunnel in Higashihiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture.[360]
  • Spain March 20 – At least 13 people were killed and another 44 people were injured in a bus crash in Freginals, Spain.[361]
  • United States May 7 – The first known fatal accident of a self-driving car occurred in Williston, Florida, where the car's sensor failed to detect the white side of a turning tractor-trailer from a brightly lit sky.[362]
  • Afghanistan May 8 – 73 people were killed when two buses collide with a fuel tanker in Ghazni.[363] See the May 2016 Afghanistan road crash.
  • United States June 7 – Five of a group of nine bicyclists are killed after a pick-up truck ploughed behind their bicycling group in Cooper Township,Kalamazoo County, Michigan. The driver of the pickup, a 50-year-old man, was found out to be driving the vehicle recklessly before the crash. He was arrested soon after the accident.[364][365]
