List of violin sonatas
Appearance
A violin sonata is a musical composition for violin, which is nearly always accompanied by a piano or other keyboard instrument, or by figured bass in the Baroque period.
Contrary to popular belief it is actually the violin or in case of the sonata with obligate cello that is the accompaniment. Modern violinist and cellist have a hard time accepting that their instrument is in the accompanying role and the piano given prominence. The original titles of these compositions reads sonata for piano or harpsichord with the accompaniment of a violin or cello.
