Route 172 commenced operating on 1 February 1992 between Grove Park and Finsbury Square via Catford, Brockley, New Cross, Elephant & Castle, Blackfriars, St Paul's and London Wall partly replacing route 141.

On 18 July 1992, the route was diverted at London Wall from Finsbury Square to Liverpool Street station, partly replacing Red Arrow route 502. On 12 March 1994 it was withdrawn south of Brockley Rise.

On 20 September 1999, route 172 was rerouted to operate via Waterloo and terminate at St Paul's, this section being replaced by route 100.

Upon being re-tendered, the route was retained by London Central with a new contract commencing on 17 March 2001. London Central commenced a further contract on 18 March 2006. [1] When next tendered, it passed to Abellio London's Walworth garage on 19 March 2011.[2][3] Abellio London commenced operating the service with ex Armchair Passenger Transport Alexander ALX400 bodied Dennis Trident 2s.
