MBC Gayo Daejejeon, also spelt Gayo Daejejun (and commonly called MBC Gayo Daejun) is a major annual end-of-the-year music program broadcast on 31 December by Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).[1][2][3]
History
On 2 December 1966, the cultural broadcasting... by the name of the "Ten Rising Artists" aired on MBC radio and what is now named the Sejong Cultural Foundation from the Seoul Citizens Center. Each year ten of the most influential artists in that time frame are considered where one was crowned "the king of the ten." As television came to Korea in 1969, the program began from 2 December 1970 to broadcast via radio and TV.
Following the 1972 event the Seoul Citizen's Center became incinerated so during 1973-1987 the locale changed to the Culture Celebratory Hall of Jeong-dong. Following the 1975 merge of the Culture Broadcast and Kyeong-hyang Newspaper with an anniversary of 1 November emerged. In 1974 the broadcast program's named changed to "Ten Top Artist's Songs" and was held the last Saturday of October. In 1979 the event was scheduled for 27 October, however due to the 10.26 event the program was delayed until 31 December that year with the trend continuing of an alternative year-end airing.
In 2005 following 38 years of consecutive airing the show was discontinued following a boycott of participation by the top ten contestants. Despite having no competition or awards, the festival format changed and with the title of "MBC Gayo Daejejeon" which aired 31 December. In 2006 at 임진각 평화누리 aired and during 2007-2009 progressed along the MBC Dream Center with a February live broadcast. Ground wave broadcast networks of three companies have decided to discontinue airing of the program with a long-term prospect that this choice will be upheld.
Sometime between 1987 and 1988, the broadcast also began by the name Gayo Daejejeon. This was due to the boycott on the part of the artist candidates.
Additionally, from 1993-1998 the program aired as MBC Korea Gayo Jeojeon.
