Maho Girls PreCure! (魔法つかいプリキュア! Mahōtsukai Purikyua!?, lit. "Magician Pretty Cure"), also called Maho Girls Pretty Cure, is an 2016 Magical girl Anime television series by Toei Animation and the thirteenth installment in Izumi Todo's Pretty Cure franchise.[1] The series, which is being directed by Masato Mitsuka and written by Isao Murayama with character design by Emiko Miyamoto,[2] began airing on ANN television stations from February 7, 2016, succeeding Go! Princess PreCure in its initial timeslot. The series' main theme is friendship with witches being the series's main motif.[3]

Story[edit]

During her second year of middle school, Mirai Asahina, a girl excited by various things, goes with her stuffed doll Mofurun to investigate a mysterious object that fell from the sky. There, she meets a young magician named Riko, who wears a pendant similar to the one Mirai has and is searching for something known as the Linkle Stone Emerald. When dark servants of the evil witch Dokuroxy come seeking the Linkle Stone Emerald, Mirai and Riko join hands with Mofurun and transform into the Legendary Magicians, the Maho Girls Pretty Cures, to fight against them. Thus, Mirai is brought into a world of magic, where she and Riko must learn how to use magic in order to stop Dokuroxy.[2]

Magician Pretty Cures[edit]

The Magician Pretty Cures (or "Magical Pretty Cures" (魔法のプリキュア Mahō no Purikyua?)) are Legendary Magicians who once fought against Dark Magician, each possessing immerse powerful magic and items called "Linkle Stones" (リンクルストーン Rinkuru Sutōn?). Today, Mirai and Riko both inherit the powers of the legendary magicians in order to search for the Emerald Linkle Stone. Both Mirai and Riko can perform spells with their wands by chanting the phrase "Cure Up RaPaPa!" (キュアップ・ラパパ! Kyuappu RaPaPa!?). They can transform into Pretty Cures by using the Linkle Stones with Mofurun and chanting "Miracle Magical Jeweliray" (ミラクル・マジカル・ジュエリーレ Mirakuru Majikaru Juerīre?), and can use enhanced magic with the Linkle Stick (リンクルステッキ Rinkuru Sutekki?). By using different Linkle Stones, the Cures can transform into four different styles; Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire, and Topaz, allowing them to use different kinds of magic.

Mirai Asahina (朝日奈 みらい Asahina Mirai?) / Cure Miracle (キュアミラクル Kyua Mirakuru?)

A thirteen year-old middle school student living in the No Magic World (ナシマホウ界 Nashimahō Kai?). She is a lovely and energetic girl who is interested in many things, especially magicians and witches. Though she has no friends, she usually goes out with her stuffed bear Mofurun in all places until she meets Riko. After she and Riko became Pretty Cures, she begins attending magic school. Her family runs an accessories and jewelry shop.
As Cure Miracle, she introduces herself as "The miracle of two people! Cure Miracle!" (ふたりの奇跡!キュアミラクル! Futari no Kiseki! Kyua Mirakuru!?) and she represents miracles.
Riko (リコ Riko?) / Cure Magical (キュアマジカル Kyua Majikaru?)
Voiced by: Yui Horie[4]
A mysterious thirteen year-old girl hailing from Magical World and attends the Magic School (魔法学校 Mahō Gakkō?). Though she is good at studying and often believes her calculations to be correct, she is not that good at casting magic on her own. After her kingdom is been targeted by Dark Magician, she decided to search for the Linkle Stone Emerald, only for her to meet up with Mirai for the first time.
As Cure Magical, she introduces herself as "The magic of two people! Cure Magical!" (ふたりの魔法!キュアマジカル! Futari no Mahō! Kyua Majikaru!?) and she represents magic.

Magical World[edit]

Mofurun (モフルン?)
Voiced by: Ayaka Saitō[4]
A teddy bear given to Mirai by her grandmother after she was born. Mirai treats him as a little brother and friend in the time she grows up. She wished that he can talk to her, but when an attack from Dark Magician happened, he came to life when Mirai and Riko both became Pretty Cures for the first time. Mofurun acts as the girl's transformation device and often ends sentences with "mofu".
Ha-chan (はーちゃん Hā-chan?)
Voiced by: Saori Hayami
A mysterious baby fairy who resides in the Linkle Smartphone.

Dark Magician[edit]

The Dark Magician (闇の魔法つかい Yami no Mahōtsukai?) are a group of rebel magicians, whose goal is to search for the Linkle Stone Emerald for them to dominate both Magical World and the No Magic World. They serve as the main antagonist group of the series.

Leaders[edit]

Dokuroxy (ドクロクシー Dokurokushī?)
The main antagonist of the series and leader of Dark Magician. A power-hungry witch who seek the Linkle Stone Emerald to dominate the world.
Yamoh (ヤモー Yamō?)
Voiced by: Yasuhiro Takato
Dokuroxy's secretary and second-in-command of the group. An eccentric short-sized man who has an appearance of a gecko and wearing a wizard outfit, he was aware of the existence of Linkle Stone Emerald. He was in charged of taking command of the Magician Trio under his mistress' order.

Generals[edit]

They act as Dokuroxy's veteran minion with Yamoh was in charge of leading the trio and were sent to Earth to claim the Linkle Stone Emerald. They can use their dark magic by using the crow's feather to creates Yokubal and each of them bear an appearance of an animal.

Batty (バッティ Batti?)
Voiced by: Kōji Yusa
One of the wizard of the Magician Trio. A polite and kind gentleman who has an appearance of a bat from his ears. He also holds a cane with a skull and dress up like dracula. His name is a nickname for bat.
Spalda (スパルダ Suparuda?)
One of the witch of the Magician Trio. A cunning tactician lady who has an appearance of a spider. She often come up with a scheme to lure the Cures into her trap.
Gamets (ガメッツ Gamettsu?)
One of the wizard of the Magician Trio. A hot-headed and serious man who has an appearance of a turtle.
Yokubal (ヨクバール Yokubāru?)
Voiced by: Takahiro Shimada
The monsters of the series with an appearance of a skull and crow, created by the generals with dark magic by using the crow's black feather then fuses with any objects, named after the word yokubō (欲望?, "greed").

Anime[edit]

Maho Girls PreCure! was first revealed via a trademark filing posted on October 19, 2015,[5] and was publicly announced on November 26, 2015.[6] The series began airing on all ANN television stations from February 7, 2016 along with the Broadcasting System of San-in airing on February 13, 2016.

Films[edit]

The Maho Girls Pretty Cure will appear in the eighth Pretty Cure All Stars crossover film, Pretty Cure All Stars: Singing with Everyone♪ Miraculous Magic!, which will be released in theaters on March 19, 2016.[7]

Music[edit]

The opening theme is "Dokkin♢Mahōtsukai PreCure!" (Dokkin♢魔法つかいプリキュア! Exciting Maho Girls PreCure!?) composed by Aiko Okumura and performed by Rie Kitagawa, who previously performed the ending themes for Go! Princess PreCure, while the ending theme is "Cure Up↑ Ra♡Pa☆Pa!~ Hohoemi ni Naru Mahō ~" (CURE UP↑RA♡PA☆PA!〜ほほえみになる魔法〜 Cure Up↑ Ra♡Pa☆Pa! ~Magic to Make You Smile~?) composed by Akifumi Tada and performed by Rie Takahashi and Yui Horie.[8] The music is composed by Hiroshi Takaki, who previously composed the music for DokiDoki! PreCure, HappinessCharge PreCure!, and Go! Princess PreCure. The single will be released on March 2, 2016 by Marvelous! featuring the theme songs.

Manga[edit]

Like the series before it, a manga adaptation illustrated by Futago Kamikita will begin serialization in Kodansha's Nakayoshi magazine from February 3, 2016.[9]

Merchandise[edit]

Bandai will release various merchandise during the series including watches, bags, and transformation items.
