Belafonte moved to Paris to model, where she was linked to Pierre Caland, grandson of former Lebanese President Bechara El Khoury. She was often seen at the Paris nightclub Les Bains Douches in the company of Prince, Gipsy Kings, top model Nina Klepp, photographer Jean-Francois Jonvelle and Gunnar Larsen. In Paris she met singer Jean Beauvoir and appeared on his album Jacknifed through Columbia Records.[2]

She dated Kiss frontman Paul Stanley for two years. She appeared in singer Carol King's music video "City Streets", alongside Eric Clapton. The song was a top 20 hit on the U.S. Billboard contemporary chart.

"The new Speyer Legacy School was started by a group of high-powered mothers — including Malena Belafonte, the daughter-in-law of the singer Harry Belafonte — who had sent their children to Hollingworth Preschool, at Teachers College at Columbia University, though there is no official connection between Hollingworth and Speyer."
