McCarter & English, LLP, is an American full-service law firm headquartered in Newark, New Jersey. Founded in 1845, it is one of the oldest law firms in the United States. Besides its Newark headquarters, the firm has offices across the Northeastern United States in Boston, Hartford, Stamford, New York City, East Brunswick, Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Washington, D.C.
The firm’s clients include Fortune 100, mid-cap, closely held, and emerging companies, and include some of the nation’s leading financial, industrial, pharmaceutical, and commercial enterprises as well as educational, health care, government, and nonprofit institutions.
The firm is known for both its litigation and transactional work, and has significantly broadened its capabilities organically and strategically throughout the firm’s history. This expansion continued into the venture capital and emerging company space with the firm’s combination with East Brunswick, New Jersey-based SorinRand, a leading boutique firm advising early-stage and emerging growth companies in technology and tech-enabled industries and the investors who support them, in October 2014. McCarter has also recently strengthened its energy and environmental practice with the acquisition in February 2014 of a preeminent Washington, DC-based energy law boutique, Miller, Balis & O’Neil.
Pro Bono Initiatives
McCarter & English has a long commitment to public service and expects its attorneys to participate in activities that promote the public interest. Through its Pro Bono Program, McCarter attorneys donate thousands of hours of their time to provide free legal services to low-income individuals and organizations of limited means in communities surrounding each of the firm’s offices. Time spent on pro bono work is counted toward associates’ billable hours without limitation, and all attorneys are supported in providing pro bono services. McCarter attorneys also provide services to the legal profession, through appointments to Supreme Court committees or as Special Masters, and through work with state bar associations. Additionally, McCarter attorneys teach at area law schools, conduct professional practice and skills trainings, and otherwise contribute to the development of law students and young lawyers.
