Meldal dialect or Meldal Norwegian is a dialect of Norwegian used in Meldal. It is a variety of Trøndersk.
Phonology
Vowels
- /iː/ is realized in a very original manner. It is a syllabic, palatalized frictionless dental approximant [ð̩ʲ˕ː]. This is realization is also found in some dialects of Swedish.[1][2]
- Old Norse diphthongs ⟨ei⟩ and ⟨øy⟩ are realized as long monophthongs [eː] and [øː]. This is the case in a large part of Sør-Trøndelag in general.[2]
