The Miss South Carolina competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of South Carolina in the Miss America pageant. The pageant was first held in Myrtle Beach and moved to Greenville starting in 1958 and remained in that city until the 1990s. Spartanburg hosted the pageant in a few different venues until new leadership took over the organization and moved the pageant to Columbia, SC in 2011. The pageant was televised since the 1960s until the 1998 pageant. Televising was resumed with the 2000 pageant through 2006. The pageant returned to television in 2014.[1]

With victories in both 1957 and 1994, South Carolina has twice won the Miss America crown.

Official documents list two different birth dates for the new Miss South Carolina, one of which would have made her too old to compete in the pageant. Tonya Leigh Helms, who competed as Miss Greater Greer, succeeded Kimberly Aiken as the state titlist this past week after Ms. Aiken won the Miss America pageant. Ms. Helms' South Carolina driver's license lists her birth date as Sept. 19, 1968. That would make her 25 years old, and pageant rules say Miss South Carolina contestants cannot turn 25 before Step. 30 in the year they "intend to compete in the national finals of the pageant." The fact sheet released by pageant officials contains the same Sept. 19 birth date. But pageant directory Joseph Sanders said Ms. Helms' won't turn 25 until Dec. 19. He sent The Associated Press a copy of what he said is her birth certificate. That lists her birth date as Dec. 19, 1968, which would make her 24.
