Mita Nag,[মিতা নাগ] daughter of veteran sitarist, Pandit Manilal Nag and grand daughter of Sangeetacharya Gokul Nag, belongs to the Vishnupur Gharana of Bengal, a school of music nearly 300 years old. In terms of lineage, Mita is the sixth generation sitar player in her family, the tradition having begun with her fore fathers. Mita born in 1969 was initiated into music at the tender age of four. Her tutelage under her father started at the age of six. In 1979 in the International Year of the Child, she appeared for her debut performance at the age of ten. Mita is a Masters in English Literature and an M.Phil. in English from The University of Calcutta
As a soloist Mita has performed in major music festivals of India and abroad. Her remarkable performances includes " Swarna Samaroha Festival of Sangeet Natak Academy to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of India’s Independence in 1997, Sankatmochan Music Festival, Varanasi, Doverlane Golden Jubilee Celebrations in 2002, Saptak Music Festival, Uttarparha Sangeet Chakra Conference,Salt Lake Music Festival, Doverlane’s tribute to Tagore on his 150th Birth Anniversary, 2011 and Doverlane Conference in 2013, Salt Lake Music Festival, World Music Institute, New York in 2006, Darbar Festival, London, 2015. Shehas also performed in many cities of he has also performed at many music conferences of USA,Germany, Belgium and Netherlands.
Mita founded The Gokul Nag Memorial Foundation, a Trust for the preservation and promotion of Hindustani Music, in the fond memory of her grandfather, Sangeetacharya Gokul Chandra Nag of the Vishnupur Gharana.Gokul Nag Memorial Foundation had its inauguration in 2002 at Uttam Mancha in the presence of the most prominent musicians of Kolkata. The Foundation provides a stage for talented young musicians as well as featuring Maestros in the field. Occasionally, seminars and workshops are held too.This foundation also has a private collection of the music of Gokul Nag and Manilal Nag.
